Local School Land Tax Raise Brings Protest
Southwestern Settlement and Development Company will protest its 1961 school taxes in Silsbee ISD if land acreage values are raised from 15 to 24.50 dollars per acre. Jasper attorney Whitworth told the district board of tax equalization after hearings with major taxpayers, including Kirby Lumber and Sinclair Oil. The district faces a total tax roll near 27.57 million dollars to fund 1961-62 operations, with land valued at 24.50 per acre and oil properties totaling over 12 million. Major taxpayers voiced concerns on how values were derived, while Sinclair Oil and Atlantic Refining signaled willingness to work toward settlement as taxes are due October 1 and delinquency dates loom.
