Overstocking Reduces Catfish Size in Private Ponds

A South Texan finds overstocking, not disease, shrinks his catfish. The Game and Fish Commission biologist cites experiments: one acre with 50 fingerlings yields 18.9 inch fish in eight months. 75 per acre gives 16.3 inch fish in 18 months. 100 per acre yields 15.9 inches and about 22 ounces. Some ponds reach 15.75 inches after nine months with 100 per acre. Waters can produce a fixed total fish weight if population is limited.
