Two Killed in Cotton Field Truck Tragedy
Ten year old Benjamin Lee Mercer was killed instantly when he fell from a moving cotton truck on the Harry Collier farm near Bertrand. Lin dell Thompson, 22, drove the truck as brothers Kenneth, 13, and other workers rode on the vehicle. The boy attempted to climb aboard, slipped, and was crushed by the right rear wheel. Coroner John Nunnelee ruled it a crushed skull. Funeral arrangements are incomplete with Nunnelee Funeral Home in charge. Survived by mother Dorothy Mercer, six brothers and four sisters, including Kenneth, James, Lewis, Howard, and Delores Hagan.

Highway accident claims Lilbourn youth life
An 18 year old New Madrid county youth, Charles Henry Denton of Lilbourn, died in a head on collision on Highway 60 west of Sikeston. His 1947 Chevrolet collided with Patsy Antonio Celentano 1948 Ford truck from Oakland City Indiana, injuring Celentano who was hospitalized. The crash occurred about 4 50 p m with Denton passing another vehicle when he struck Celentano head on. Denton died from internal injuries a fractured skull and broken limbs. Celentano survived with concussion and multiple abrasions. State Highwaymen investigated.

The Scott County Milling Co sells between three and four carloads of corn cobs daily to the Quaker Oats Co of Memphis. Byron Bowman purchasing agent says about 40 carloads have been bought this season and will continue. Furfural from cobs used in synthetic rubber and oil refining, with residue used as fertilizer filler.

Farmer Bell To State Hospital For Murder Case
Eugene Bell 35 a Wolf Island farmer was tried on first degree murder charges for the slaying of James D Ringe. A jury found him not guilty by reason of insanity and not yet sane, ordering commit to the State Hospital at Farmington or Fulton with the final site to be decided by Circuit Court. Bell had been previously confined at Farmington State Hospital after an earlier insanity adjudication.
