Red Cross Sets Production HQ at Sikeston Armory
Red Cross will establish a Sikeston unit production center in the new armory. The American Legion meeting room becomes a sewing room as Mrs. C. D. Matthews Jr. leads committees, with chairs named for work rooms, sewing, knitting, inspections, and solicitation. Volunteers will stockpile materials and begin sewing, knitting, and dressings as supplies arrive.

The Lair Company celebrates 41 years serving Sikeston Missouri with a nine by 240 foot linoleum strip along Center street dubbed the largest carpet in the world. F D Lair notes the Sikeston store employs fourteen. Charleston store led by Frank Lair Jr. since inception. Glenn Matthews Home From the West
Mr and Mrs Glenn Matthews and son Floyd Alfred returned home Sunday from a three weeks motor trip to California and other western points. They visited Golden Gate in San Francisco Yellowstone Yosemite Imperial Valley Boulder Dam Carlsbad Caverns and other sights. On the way back 4400 miles of pavement were washed out by a flood. They made contact with Sikeston friends including Mrs C E Pancoast and Mr and Mrs W H Thomas in Los Angeles and other relatives in El Monte Huntington Park Norwalk and Little Rock during the trip. Mr Matthews brother A Jack Matthews was in Veterans Hospital in Little Rock and showed slight improvement. The trip was a fine family outing though Mr Matthews found the Southeast Missouri lowlands easier on nerves.

Fires Cause Minor Damage At Two Local Buildings
Saturday afternoon slight damage occurred at the E. P. Coleman Company plant when smoke from the ginning room blew into the seed house making it appear at risk. A second fire at the Ellise Funeral Home on Scott street caused slight roof damage to the garage from sparks. The Herald notes advertising offers for cards.

Sikeston Tests Water Use At One Million Gallons Daily
Sikeston residents reportedly use about one million gallons of water daily during July through early September, equating to roughly 143 gallons per person per day for a 7000 population. The city’s Board of Public Works plans another well to meet demand as temperatures rise.

Plans Made for Home Economics Conference
Glenn Carr and Betty Jo Branum were chosen as Sikeston high school's representatives to the Home Economics Conference to be held here Saturday October 14. A meeting of home economics representatives from various high schools planned the conference. A definite program is not yet determined, but a fashion show, dance and tea are expected components.
