Ray Lucas Named To Supreme Court Bench
Ray B Lucas of Scott county was seated on the Missouri Supreme Court Wednesday to fill the vacancy caused by the death of Judge Wm F Frank. Lucas, Benton resident and attorney since 1916, will serve until January 1 1939. He is a Missouri University and University of Chicago law alumnus and was active in Democratic politics. His salary is $625 a month.

Lands Sold Rise in Southeast Missouri Deals
Caleb Smith of Sikeston, a real estate operator, completed an 208 acre sale west of Sikeston to Arkansas interests. He also sold 120 acres west of Morehouse to D Chamness, who once owned land in Kansas. Chamness notes the dust bowl damaged 10.5 sections there, but now farms show excellent crops across 624 acres west of Morehouse after clearing 360 acres. Smith reports heavy advertising mailings to Sikeston and Southeast Missouri yielding strong inquiries.

County Organizes for Highway Campaign in Scott County
Dr W O Finney of Chaffee elected chairman of the Scott county group to back Proposition 6 the Ten Year Plan for Missouri highways at a Benton court house meeting. Campaign officials Noonan and Trowbridge explained the measure with about 50 attendees including the county court and highway commission. Cotton Ginnings Slow After Rain at Sikeston Gins
About 500 bales of cotton have been ginned to date at Sikeston gins but picking slows after Tuesday rain. White and colored pickers are available, with wages from 60 to 75 cents per hundred pounds. Ginnings so far are 100 bales less than the same period last season.

Saving gasoline no sure sign of thrift
A Model T Ford owned by Leonard Couch of the J. A. Stallcup lands west of Sikeston caught fire three times Friday afternoon from a leaky gasoline tank. The third blaze burned the right side of Couch’s face and singed his hair and eyebrows. He stopped the car near the Sikeston Gin, dumped a bucket to catch fuel, and once the fire department arrived he quenched the flames. Couch quipped, No more buckets for me let er dap.

Miller Sentenced on Second Charge in Soybeans Theft
Lyndol Miller a 19 year old from Sikeston was sentenced to four years in the state penitentiary after pleading guilty to burglary and larceny in connection with the theft of 2400 pounds of soybeans from Buckeye Plantation warehouse east of Sikeston in Mississippi county valued at 150 dollars. Judge Frank Kelly deferred ruling on parole until September 26.
