The South Grade PTA executive committee met at the home of Mr. and Mrs. William Bess with president Everett Weiss presiding. Members present included Mrs. Summers, Mrs. Farris, Mrs. Zarkor, Mrs. Cook, Mr. and Mrs. Struwe, Mrs. Trankford, Mr. and Mrs. Hahs, Mrs. Bess, and Robert Miller. Plans for the first PTA meeting and tentative future programs were discussed, and the singing chart for the upcoming PBS year was reviewed. Refreshments followed. Judy Murback, 18, of 706 Park, is entered as a candidate for queen at the National Soybean Festival in Portageville, sponsored by Planters Bank. Murback, Sikeston High Class of 1956, was Miss Sikeston 1955 Cotton Carnival, drum majorette, NHS member, and plans to attend Michigan State University. The 1957 Miss Missouri will be chosen at the soybean festival this Friday afternoon and evening.
Attendance totals shown for Sikeston churches include First Methodist 515 First Baptist 474 First Assembly of God 447 Church of the Nazarene 290 Tanner Street Church of God 261 Second General Baptist 98.
The service will dedicate an educational plant valued at 85 000 dollars as the first unit in the congregation’s building program. It includes 15 classrooms for nursery through high school and four adult groups, a carpeted parlor, pastors study, office, kitchen, wide corridors, storage, blonde furniture and drapes. Reception to follow open house at the church with Rev Worden and Mrs Worden. Rev Davis who helped start his ministry returns for the occasion.
The Lewis family celebrates twenty years since O C Lewis started in Sikestones with a Malone Avenue appliance store. The business expanded through relocations to Chip's Shoe Alley Highway 61 N and N Kingshighway, forming Lewis Sales Co and Lewis Gas. In March a new Lewis Furniture Center is under construction between the gas offices and original site.
Shirley Crew, 15, daughter of Mr and Mrs Shelby Crow, will vie as a contestant in the 12th annual American Legion Cotton Carnival Queen pageant during the three day event starting Thursday September 27 in Bernie.
Ewart S. Taylor assistant postmaster at Sikeston will depart Monday for Kirksville to join district manager Newton. They will tour eastern Missouri offices from town border to Arkansas border conducting supervisor instruction on inspecting city carrier routes preparing reports and adjusting routes. After completing the tour Taylor will return to Sikeston.
Mrs Sylvia Phillips wife of Tee AO Phillips died at her Morley home at 4 30 am Wednesday after a long illness. Born March 20 1897 in Limestone Arkansas she married Dec 19 1920. Survived by six sons Delmer Vick Chicago Vance New Bedford Mass Verlon Chaffee Vernon Morley Lieut James A Phillips Fort Ord Cal and two daughters Mrs Burlin C Newell Peoria Ill and Rita Tsola Phillips Memphis Tenn. six sisters and one brother and 14 grandchildren. Body to lie in state at Ear J Smith Funeral Home until Friday service at 2 pm Church of Christ Morley Arkansas.
The Missouri Bar sponsors Constitution and the Law Week from Sept 17 to 24 to raise public awareness of how laws affect daily life. Officials noted many citizens misunderstand legal basics and rights, and officials aim to educate through the campaign aided by ABA.
Representative James S. Wallace cited a press release from the agriculture commissioner noting pink bollworms found at three check points into Missouri. Inspectors reported 22 worms in cotton bolls carried by tourists this year, up from three last year, with twenty believed from Texas where infestation rose 400 percent. Wallace said funds for the program totaling $75,000 will run out and he will seek another appropriation.
The Delta Rotary Club was chartered at a Monday Charter Night attended by representatives from eighteen clubs from St Louis to Kennett and Sikeston. District Governor K Lewis presented the charter to Thomas Lett, with Vernan Dillman assisting. officers include Frank Jones, Hubert Right, Hugh Lumsden, and others. Speakers praised Rotary’s service above self while gifts from clubs underscored the theme that it is more natural for man to be a brother than a foe.
School heads including superintendent twin Tarte and Board President J M Standley will join panel discussions at the Cape Girardeau Conference on Fidneatan on Tuesday September 18. More than 150 delegates from surrounding counties expected. sponsored by Missouri White House Conference Committee and supported by the State Department of Education.

Mary Louise Hartline a 14 year old of Lilbourn Missouri died after being struck by a car driven by Rev James D Wade 47 of Conran as she crossed a highway to retrieve mail The tragedy occurred two miles south of Lilbourn on Highway 153 The victim was taken to Missouri Delta Community Hospital then died In addition to her parents she left five brothers and four sisters with J H O Hartline of Malden as paternal grandfather The accident was reported by the State Highway Patrol
In New Madrid Shiver Bay Rast 19 a Marine, Cama Pendre Ton of California, died from a personal safety related wound after arrest in Kennet area. He was taken to the Wisshourt Community Hospital in Skeson where he died shortly after arrival. Captain Roehter of the St Louis Marines Corps presented on scene findings and stated Rost had been SWOT Fran Cana Pendleton and declared a deserter on Sem 4. Funeral arrangements will be announced later by Richards Funeral Home.
Ten Sikeston Southwestern Bell Telephone workers are praised for a long period with no lost time injuries and high safety performance. The company manager cites names such as Horace Coats George King Paul Brown Thorsaas Howard John Hooper and William Hale as part of the team earning the National Safety Council Award for outstanding safety. The award marks the fourth time in five years that Southwestern Bell has won the honor along with other Bell systems nationwide.
A tool fell on EW Vines, 4, of Kewanee, wounding him at work with a scalp laceration. Monidas At Blodectt Sweared Steven Mor gan and Bernie nearby suffered injuries from a swing fall and a corn elevator incident. Robert A. Jordan, 17, caught his hand in a corn elevator and was admitted for treatment after initial care.
