Farm Leaders Hold Fifth Annual Meet in Cape
Approximately 125 agricultural extension and farm leaders from 20 southeastern Missouri counties met at State College Cape Girardeau for an all day session. Alfred Limbaugh presided as introductions and remarks highlighted by B W Harrison and W W Parker. Leaders discussed the Hoover Commission report and future plans for district advisory conferences. Delegates elected Arline Avery, Mrs Walter Sides, ME Allen, and Alice Moore to the advisory committee with several alternates named.

National Guard Encampment Ends at Fort Leonard Wood
Eight thousand two hundred seventy seven members of the 35th Division from Missouri and Kansas completed a two week National Guard encampment at Fort Leonard Wood. The Army trained recruits and veterans with new tactics and equipment including a 57 mm recoilless rifle. An air show at Vichy featured a mass parachute jump and an aerial resupply mission. Tropies were awarded to division champions in softball and other sports.

Sikeston Guards First to Enroll All Men in State Association
The Headquarters and Headquarters Company of Sikeston’s 140th Infantry Regiment units enrolled both officers and enlisted in the Missouri National Guard Association after a two week training at Fort Leonard Wood. A full recruiting program is underway with several vacancies for qualified men. Enlistment offers full Army retirement credits and regular pay starting at $1.25 per hour. The camp athletic program featured softball, boxing, table tennis, billiards, a service club, theaters, and first run movies. International shoe factories in Sikeston Cape Girardeau and Poplar Bluff resumed operations after a shutdown.

Strike May Suspend Milling Operations in Sikeston
Scott County Milling Company warns that a Missouri Pacific railroad strike scheduled to start tomorrow may cut milling plant operations in Sikeston. Much switching relies on MP tracks. if cars aren’t moved, grain must be moved or processed elsewhere. The strike begins at 3 PM tomorrow. the Senior Chamber of Commerce plans a meeting Monday evening.

Four-Car Collision Injures Four Near Sikeston
A four car crash east of Sikeston on Highway 60 left four injured including Thomas Gwaltney and Gertrude Surrat. Police say Paul Ivar Sihotser drove a Mercury into a station wagon, which hit a Ford coach, injuring William Nicholson and others. An arrest followed for careless driving while intoxicated.

Dinner for Teachers at Airport Cafeteria
After a Monday faculty and departmental meeting Sikeston teachers dined at the airport cafeteria hosted by Superintendent Bremen Van BIBber and principals R J Genins and Miss Dorothea Miller. Efforts to rescue a companion failed. Funeral services were held at Iowa Baptist Church in Cape Girardeau County with burial in the local cemetery. Two small girls died in Wayne County traffic incidents Monday. Linda Ruth Campbell, six, died when Greensville’s strip choir car struck her as she ran toward a bus on her way to school. The driver of the death car was Charles Thomas Spacagcauss of St Louis. The girl’s father was killed in a Bentonville, Ohio traffic crash last March. Catherine Coffman, three, daughter of Ed Coffman Siva, was killed by an automobile driven by Walter Scott of Flat Rivers on Highway 67 near Siva.

Holiday Death Toll Sets New Labor Day Records
The three day Labor Holiday saw more than 550 people killed in accidents nationwide. Traffic crashes accounted for 150 deaths, 55 drowned, and 87 non traffic fatalities in fires, falls, and other mishaps. The rate was about one death every eight and a half minutes over 78 hours. Ned H. Dearborn, president of the Safety Council, urged action to curb the deadly trend.

Sikeston public schools opened the term with about 300 net enrollment rise. total on opening day reached 2188.
