Britain will lift five years of blackout rules with limited exceptions in coastal zones. The Ministry of Home Security announced last night that lights will come on and drapes no longer needed, boosting morale as wartime restrictions ease.
Sikeston bans sale of intoxicating liquor and beer within city limits for 36 hours after Germany defeat announcement and disallow firearms. Additional actions include police hire, officer school, sidewalk petitions, street repairs, two new beer licenses, transfer of Bijou concession, sale of four Frisco lots, and August police and fire reports.
Willie Tyson of Morehouse, a former inmate of Algoa Reformatory, waived preliminary hearing before Justice of the Peace Frank Smith on a charge of automobile theft. He is held in Scott County jail at Benton for circuit courttrial. Tyson was arrested in New Madrid by city officers for the theft of a 1940 Ford owned by Luther Glass of near Sikeston. Constable George Seufert of Sikeston transported him for the hearing.
Mr and Mrs Charles Chapman of Morehouse welcomed a daughter at the local hospital on September 2. Mr and Mrs Gene Saalwecht of Sikeston welcomed a son at the local hospital on September 3. James Wilburn is the name of the son born to Mr and Mrs Roy Hutchinson at their home near Sikeston on September 3. Mr and Mrs Lon Swanner and daughter Mrs Charles Frissell and husband of Cape Girardeau visited relatives in St Louis from Saturday to Monday.
Sikeston's American Legion and Veterans of Foreign Wars were urged by the Chamber of Commerce to prepare a peace celebration after Germany’s armistice. Proposals include 24 hour business shutdowns, church services, and community meetings. The city council already passed an ordinance prohibiting liquor sales and firearm discharge for 36 hours after peace is declared. Lieutenant Hilton A. Wick, a combat bombardier with the Air Medal and 11 Oak Leaf Clusters, spoke at the dinner at Dunn Hotel.
American War Dads in Alexandria and Sikeston organize aid for disabled veterans collecting 65 canes and maintaining the Honor Roll Board in Legion Park. Sikeston plans to add names of every local service member, urging relatives to submit missing entries to P O Box 351.
Funeral services were held at the Assembly of God church in Canalou for William Patrick Scott 61 as he was killed in an automobile accident Sunday on Highway 14 east of Doniphan. Survived by wife daughter and two sisters.
The mercury dropped to 56 this morning easing a hot spell. The week’s high of 94 occurred Monday September 4. Forecaster Coen Sexton of the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics predicts cooler days Friday and Saturday with Sunday turning warmer and a chance of afternoon thunderstorms. Spain produced nearly 190000 tons of cork in the last year.
Twin sisters Frances and Elizabeth Woods of Rome Georgia flew their own airplane to Harvey Parks Airport yesterday visiting Miss Evelyn Klein. They traveled from Rome to Sikeston in four hours with one refueling stop, plan to go to Columbia on Friday, then return via Sikeston. Klein awaits another guest tomorrow when her fiancé Flight Officer Edward Harris arrives from Dallas en route to the East Coast.
Thirty of Sikeston's 47 public school teachers list as at home. The tabulation includes Supt. Stallings and many named staff with their proposed residences such as Del Rey Hotel McMullin Apartments and private homes. The article names a long roster of teachers and their living arrangements for the upcoming school year.
More than three hundred cadets from the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics plus relatives and friends spent Labor Day weekend at the USO Center. Gleaners class members served refreshments while free phone calls linked cadets to families in Chicago Corpus Christi Anaheim and Chicago. Attendance for the three day holiday reached 355 with about four hundred soft drink bottles served. The hostess praised Monday as the most gratifying day since opening nineteen months earlier.
Executive committee plans for Sikeston part of the National War Fund Drive will be held at the Dunn Coffee Shop at 7 tonight. Attendees include Ralph Williams John G Powell Ed Berry W S Corrigan BE M Allen and F W Van Horne LL M Standley chairs. Tomorrow noon Standley attends district county war chest chair men meeting in southeast Missouri at the Marquette Hotel Cape Girardeau with Hal H McHaney presiding.
The State Guard unit in Sikeston seeks new members as part of a fundraiser and recruitment drive. Meetings are at the armory Monday nights from 7:30 to 9:30. Members learn drills, firearms use, and military subjects while pitching service as contributing to the war effort.
Hess Porter, county treasurer, distributed state and county money to the county schools this week. This marks the first payment by the state for the year. Amounts distributed to each school are listed below.
Jesse Lee Brown, 20, jailed for store robberies in Sikeston and Poplar Bluff, escaped yesterday from Cole county jail in Jefferson City for the second time. He had earlier broken from Algoa Reformatory, later linked to an auto theft arrest. Seibert Medley, another detainee, fled with him as state troopers conduct a search.
Ginnings by the three local pins exceed 250 bales to date. Cotton remains fair with prices steady at 22 cents, the same as last week. Seed valued at $48 per ton. Frequent rains have damaged the crop slightly, but quality may improve with sunshiny weather. Abundant pickers available.
At the Wayside Gin west of Sikeston owners FE. M. Regonald and T. F. Jackson operate the plant with Mr. Jackson managing. More than seventy bales of cotton have been ginned this season and the crop is in good condition with expectations of yielding a bale per nere.
Technical Sgt. Vance Engram and Pvt. Dennis L. Lynn of Sikeston serve in the 133rd Infantry fighting along the Arno River in Italy. The Fifth Army dispatch notes the regiment’s long combat record in Tunisia and Italy, with two Congressional Medals of Honor among its decorations and numerous Distinguished Service Crosses Silver Stars and Purple Hearts.
Lieut Thomas E Miles, son of Kennett residents, reports life in a prison camp near Brest after being shot down on March 16. He describes barracks housing twelve officers, self-cooked meals, Sunday church, and Red Cross parcels. He notes healing injuries from a crash, and mentions ongoing classes in Spanish, business administration and law with YMCA books provided.
Despite fears of a sharp drop, Sikeston schools report higher first day enrollment than last year. Superintendent Tharon Stallings credits Herald ads for impact as white pupil total reaches 1383, with gains in the high school and across grades. Colored school enrollment stands at 214 with 6 in high school, up from prior year totals. Overcrowding prompts transfers to balance classes and boost individual attention.
British spokesmen in London said Eisenhower will not order unconditional surrender until German high command capitulates. Meanwhile Patton’s Third Army stalls for supplies, First Army tanks move toward Liege, and Russians advance to Turnu Severin joining Tito’s Partisans. French pursue Germans toward Dijon as Allied forces converge toward Germany. Miss Evelyn Klemm plans to resume studies at Stephens College in Missouri.
Mrs Ena Jones 68 of Sikeston died at home after a paralytic stroke. Rev Owen conducted rites at her daughter Mrs BH Leech’s Bath Street residence. Burial followed at Memorial Park cemetery with Welsh service. Survivors include husband C D Jones five sons two daughters two brothers two sisters ten grandchildren and one great grandchild. Grandson Sgt Merrell McKinney recently on leave.
Miss Reba Irene Cooksey and Bruce Alex Turner, both of Sikes ton, were married last night at the Church of the Nazarene with Rev. J. W. Hoffert officiating. Pallas J. Wallace, formerly of Sikes ton, now studying at Memorial College Newton Miss, is also engaged in preaching as part of his studies.
