District Ties Traffic Toll in Southeast Missouri
Southeast Missouri again leads in traffic accidents as a week of fatalities injuries and property damage underscores risk on highways. A collision on Highway 61 south of Sikeston involved Mrs. John Parker turning into her driveway and Jesse Young of Portageville striking her truck. Parker suffered scalp wounds and was treated at Delta Community Hospital. both vehicles were badly damaged.

Six Killed in Highway Collision Near New Madrid
Six people died Sunday at 11 30 a m when two cars collided head on at the Highway 61 62 intersection five miles south of New Madrid. The dead include Lois Rose 42 of Jackson Mary Reed 49 of Lilbourn O B Fowler 49 of Conran Salina Hall 57 of Marston John Phenix 18 of Charleston and James F Clark 22 of Fredericktown Clark died at Missouri Delta Community Hospital after being brought in on arrival. The 1941 Oldsmobile driven by Rose and a 1953 Ford coach driven by Clark collided as Rose’s car attempted a left onto 62. Phenix was taken to Sparks Funeral Home in Charleston and Rose to Wells Boyd Funeral Home in Jackson Tennessee. Reed Fowler Hull and Phenix bodies were moved to Richard Funeral Home in New Madrid.

One Hurt in Collision at Wahite
One person was injured in a head on collision of two automobiles at Wahite west of Morehouse on Highway 60 last Sunday afternoon. Clarence Stallings 73 of Enfield Ti was a passenger in one car driven by Raymond Hargett of Grayville Ti treated at Delta Community Hospital Sikeston for injuries. Also in the Hargett car were Mrs Hargett and Mrs Stallings en route home after visiting friends at Dudley.

Nineteen persons appeared before Police Judge F H Smith on charges of drunkenness disturbing the peace fighting careless and reckless driving. Maxine Davis, six months old, daughter of Mrs Hilda Davis, died from second degree burns at Missouri Delta Community Hospital after a coal stove overheated, burning the house interior. Funeral services were held at Smith Funeral Home officiated by Rev Sam Gaylor, burial at Sunset Cemetery. Earlier, five year old Louise and Catherine, also present, and James Harrington, five, suffered burns while paper fed into a stove caused fire.

James Nathan Lowery a 21 year old ex Marine shot himself at the Stork Bar in New Madrid after telling patrons he would play Russian roulette with a pistol from behind the bar. The weapon misfired on the first attempt then fired on the second, entering his right temple and exiting left. Bartender John R Sherrod tried to intervene but could not. Lowery had lived in New Madrid county about 15 years and was discharged from the Marines about a year earlier after severe wounding. Survived by his father Lige Lowery and two brothers Gene and Erwin and three sisters Mayline Barnes Jewell Kelly and Marie Nichols. Body taken to Houston for burial.

Gas Company Seeks Rate Hike From Missouri Panel
Associated Natural Gas asks the Public Service Commission of Missouri for authority to raise natural gas rates to cover higher operating costs including a $73,000 annual hike in prices charged for gas from Texas Eastern Transmission Corp. Local manager Bruce Lewis notes the company has operated at a loss since 1950 and cannot serve customers effectively without the adjustment. Residential bills would rise by about 12 percent per day for 15,000 cubic feet monthly use, with increases ranging two to thirty-nine percent by class. the $2.00 minimum may rise to $3.50 for heating only users, and summer months may see no minimum charge. Total annual increase expected near $84,000.

Born December 25 1870 near Marshall Missouri he leaves a stepdaughter Mrs James B Martin of Sikeston and a half sister Mrs Lou Brooks of Charleston plus many nieces and nephews. Funeral services were held at 2:00 pm at Welsh Funeral Chapel with Rev J W Hoffert officiating. Burial followed in Blodgett Cemetery with Welsh service.
