Playground activities draw large youth turnout
The summer program of playground activities run by the Board of Education under T M Travelstead attracted about 150 children on opening day. At South Grade School 100 youngsters attended and at Bailey Grade School about 50. Activities run 2 to 3 30 at South Grade and 4 to 5 30 at Bailey with softball daily and volleyball darts dodge ball and paddle tennis featured. All children from first grade through junior high may participate and mothers of younger children are invited to join.

Coast Guard Band to Present Show at Kennett
On June 14 the 9th Naval District Coast Band will perform The Road to Tokyo at Kennett Armory. Admission supports the 7th War Bond Drive. Thirty eight service members will perform, including musicians and singers, as the band tours to boost Dunklin county’s War Bond quota of 1,053,600, with only about a third sold.

Storm wrecks Cairo with heavy damage and $500000 loss
A 10 minute hail and wind storm swept Cairo and surrounding areas causing about 500000 dollars in damage. Hundreds of windows shattered roofs and power lines failed while trees were uprooted and fronts blown in. Girls State Project Not to Be Held in Fulton

Crop Prospects In Southeast Missouri District Improve
Crop plantings lag two to three weeks but prospects remain favorable with near average cotton acreage. Reports from Little River west of Sikeston and parts of Stoddard New Madrid and Dunklin counties show good stands and clean fields. A cotton processor noted above ground plants and promising outlook after rains in April May. Corn planting delayed yet viable. early hay cuttings damaged by rain and army worms controlled with poison in affected areas. Farmers face two yearly ruinations from late planting and July August heat but expect to endure if this year stays average.

Pipelines across Channel Fueled Allied War Effort
After D-Day, 20 three inch pipelines were laid beneath the English Channel to feed gasoline to Allied forces. Since last fall they’ve transported about 1,000,000 gallons daily to the continent. At war’s end a continuous line carried fuel from Britain to Frankfurt across the Rhine into Germany, freeing tankers for the Pacific war. The British laid the pipes and they remain in use for occupation forces. The concept originated with Lord Louis Mountbatten in 1942 when he led combined operations.

In its first year the ship fought in about a dozen engagements with Japan, helped capture Sai fan, joined battles at Philippine Sea and Leyte Gulf, aided the capture of Tinian and Guam, participated in Palau operations and strikes on Formosa and Ryukyus, backed Leyte landings, and patrolled off Iwo Jima while a destroyer division flagship. Seven enemy planes were shot down while in command.
