Andrew F Howe, St Louis inventor who netted 1 164 201 in last months patent suit settlement against Commonwealth Steel, prev bought by General Steel Castings, wins efforts to shield most of the funds from taxation. The case began in 1929 and saw ten years in court.
Sixty five seniors will receive diplomas at Sikeston High School commencement exercises Monday night May 29. Dean Theodore W. H. Irion of the University of Missouri will deliver the address. Music by the High School Orchestra and Girls Glee Club, with solos and trios, will accompany the program.
A violent storm near Buckeye east of Slkeston toppled a Buckeye Plantation warehouse with 300 bushels of soybeans nearly wrecked. Barns owned by Bill Hayman and Mr Alt suffered heavy damage as well as several smaller structures. About 1.5 inches of rain accompanied the windy climax at 7 pm.
Miss Lillian Taylor of the Herald recounts obtaining admission to President Roosevelt's press conference via Mrs. John Bowman and B. M. McKelway. The writer describes White House entry procedures, the lobby with Aguinaldo's table, the press room, and a dash with other reporters into the cabinet room for the session, noting Missouri connections among attendees.
With favorable weather cotton planting in the Sikeston Ridge area nears completion by week’s end. Stoneville 2-B and Delta and Pine Land 14 are favored varieties aiding potential acreage increase despite labor concerns. Early corn and beans are nearly all planted, watermelons surge due to high profits, and alfalfa hay along with wheat crops show strong yields as farmers begin chopping and harvesting.
Leroy C. Leslie cashier of the Bank of Sikkeston helped celebrate the telegraph centennial yesterday by receiving the message What hath God wrought from New York at the Western Union office. J G Stinnett and local papers representatives were present. Morse’s invention, first tapped out a century ago, drew an excited crowd as an old time telegraphic skill returned in kind.
Mayor G W H Presnell bought the first Memorial Day poppy to spark interest in Sikeston s Poppy Day under the American Legion Auxiliary. Poppies will be sold at three downtown tables all day Saturday with Scouts assisting. proceeds fund veteran rehabilitation. Buddy Poppies sales by the Veterans of Foreign Wars Auxiliary occur at City Drug Store with volunteers meeting at 8:45 Saturday morning.
The American Legion sponsors Memorial Day services at Sikeston city cemetery Sunday afternoon with Rev. E. D. Owen delivering “The Message of Memorial Day” based on the scriptural line Days should speak and the multitude of the years teach wisdom. Funeral parade assembles at Malone Park at 1 30 PM led by Sam Wilcox with Sikeston high school band, police honors, and a program including Methodist minister Rev W Bartley, Attorney M E Montgomery, Nazarene minister Rev J W Hoffert, and the benediction.
A group of life underwriters met at the Dunn Hotel Tuesday and formed the Tri County Life Underwriters Association with thirteen charter members from Scott Mississippi and New Madrid counties. W A Myers was elected president and J O Knapp secretary treasurer. Directors: A B Cooper Frank Miller and J B Moll. The group plans to affiliate with the National Association and aims for at least thirty members soon. The next meeting is Friday night June 9 at the Dunn Hotel.
Applications for war ballots are now obtainable at the Benton County Clerk office of Harry C. Watkins. Next of kin or the service member may apply for absentee ballots for both the August primaries and November general election to be sent to the soldier’s military address. Prompt applications are urged due to delivery difficulties for distant postings.
Rev. Walter G. Craig of Chaffee named chairman of the Scott County Social Security Commission succeeding Frank Mount of Sikeston who resigned. Members include Mrs. Beulah Emerson and Mrs. Mayme Limbaugh with Earl M. Allen of Sikeston named but declining to serve. The advisory panel, intended as four members two Democrats and two Republicans, serves without compensation.
Sikeston and Scott County mobilize for the Fifth War Loan drive on June 14, aiming to raise 285000 through intensive house to house solicitation. Rural and town volunteers, quota by community, and store closings at 430 PM are planned to ensure full participation.
