Sikeston officials authorize a new 300000 gallon water tower costing about 16000 dollars to supplement the existing 65000 gallon tank. A new 5000 dollar pump will accompany the tower on a yet to be purchased lot. Work to begin date TBA. plans to be refined at May 25 board meeting.
Sam Brooks alias Sam Thomas or Sam Winters, a 53 year old escapee from Mississippi State Penitentiary at Parchman serving a life term for murder, was arrested at 6 am by Sergeant Melvin Dace and Trooper John Tandy on a Canalou farm. He used the name Sam Thomas while employed by E. D. Willis and offered no resistance. He will be returned to Mississippi to complete his sentence.
Wes ley Depro a 50 year old farmer from near Matthews died after being thrown from a wagon when his team bolted late Saturday He died Sunday afternoon at St Francis Hospital Cape Girardeau Funeral services were held Tuesday at the Matthews high school gym with Rev Herschel Yates in charge Interment was in the Matthews cemetery He was born June 8 1888 in New Madrid County and is survived by his widow three sons Alfred Depro and Wm Depro of Matthews Harold Depro and Mrs Fred Gurley of Sikeston and a grandson and three granddaughters
Fanor students of the eighth grade are announced this week by Miss Kwra Tanner. The list includes Bill Anderson Elizabeth Ann Baker Mirey Carr Jane Cummins Jen Cummings Ann Draughon Lue Greer Phyllis Harrison Veramby Harold Lindley Claren Onyett Betty Ann Reed Tom Roberts Shirley Shainberg Tank Stevens Sue Tanner Melvin Thompson Alice Van Horne Doroy Vaught and Edwin Webster.
Final plans for the Decoration Day program will be set at the next Henry Meldrum Post American Legion meeting Monday night at the Legion club house. Colonel F. W. Bowley of Fort Leavenworth Kansas will be the principal speaker. Five teams entered in the post’s new junior baseball league practice for summer games and a tournament. Local Legion post prepares for Spanish American War veterans visiting from the State meeting at Cape Girardeau next month touring Southeast Missouri. Veterans will be met at the north Y escorted on a parade through Sikeston and served refreshments at the Legion hut on Highway 60, Dr. W. A. Anthony commander said. The tour aims to attract veterans to settle farms in the area.
Preliminary hearing for Her schel Randolph on a charge of assault with intent to kill was postponed to next Wednesday May 24 as a change of venue was granted from Justice of the Peace W S Smith. The case stems from an alleged attack on Alfons Deschamp at the Mc Coy Tanner building where Randolph works. Deschamp seeks $600 he claims Randolph owes him.
Seventy-three members of Sikeston high school’s 1959 graduating class will receive diplomas Monday evening at the annual commencement in the high school auditorium. Judge Camille Kelley of the Memphis juvenile court delivers the address. Valedictorian Billy Van Arsdale has the top four-year scholastic average. salutatorian is Miss Mary Louise Montgomery.
Sikeston residents and officials tested a temporary removal of no parking signs on the north side of Malone Avenue. The experiment aims to add parking space while authorities assess impact. no formal action was taken and the move rests on property owners and council consensus.
The third annual Sikeston high school senior trip departs Tuesday morning May 23 with 36 pupils and accompanying adults for a six day tour of New Orleans Vicksburg Memphis and other Southern points. A Greyhound bus charter and car support will transport the group at a cost of 12.50 per person for transportation lodging meals and expenses.
Reverend John L Taylor of Sikeston Methodist church will preach the baccalaureate for Sikeston high school's 1939 graduating class at 8 p m Sunday in the high school auditorium. The program features the Girls Glee Club with selections from Schubert Liszt and Gounod, scripture readings by local pastors, and a sermon by Rev Taylor. The service marks a new evening hour arrangement by the schools and Ministerial Alliance to suit graduates in cooler evening hours.
R D Sorrell Sikeston high school music instructor plans a two month summer school to run June 14 through the second week of August. Miss Mary McCray may assist. Classes will cover band orchestra instrumental and vocal work with plans not yet fixed. Existing musical groups are expected to supply most enrollments.
Miss Jean Gardner, 18, was chosen May Queen as Sikeston high school staged 1939 May Fete before 650 participants. The event featured band music, dances by young pupils, and a crown carried on a pillow by Sue Sikes and Charles Matthews. Gardner, escorted by Harold Swanagan, will be Miss Sikeston at the Ozarks Jubilee in Poplar Bluff May 27 and serves as Southeast Missouri Jubilee representative.
Sikeston high school juniors host the annual junior senior prom for the senior class in the school gymnasium tomorrow night. Rudy Heises orchestra provides music. Garland Parker sponsors the senior class and Lawrence Knepper the junior class. Mrs C D Matthews Jr Mrs EC Matthews Miss Olza Matthews and her brother Edwani, who arrived in New York after a world cruise began last January, are due home Sunday for a visit with friends and the World’s Fair.
Three representatives from the Des Moines Register and Tribune photographed farm scenes in Sikeston and surrounding district for a feature. They visited again after a January roadside labor demonstration and reported pleasing district views as laborers worked. Pilot Chas W. Gatsher flew the 6 passenger Bellanca with J S Russell, farm editor, and George Yates, photographer, aboard.
Four girls will be graduated from St Francis Navier parochial school during Sunday mass May 28 when diplomas are presented by Fev. John J O'Neill. Graduates are Pauline Layton Geneva Schwab Mary Ann Fre werd and Bonnie Schaefer. About 50 pupils in the grade school and 50 in the kindergarten.
Dairy farmers of Scott county attended a meeting at the Sikeston library to hear plans for a dairy school this fall or winter. Leon Lane announced a Missouri College dairy department representative would lead the program, with Warren Gifford of the college coordinating. Topics included clean milk and pasture needs with small grains for dairies.
Governor Lloyd C Stark did not include James ED Matthews of Sikeston in the Senate list of appointments. Matthews, director of the Department of Penal Institutions, had received a recess appointment on August 5, 1937. He is linked with Matthew S Murray, Missouri WPA director and KC public works figure in the Pendergast era.
The Missouri House of Representatives passed by two votes a bill to raise the State Highway Patrol to 165 officers. The measure would add 30 men but require Senate approval and governor assent plus funding. Earlier in 1937 the Legislature increased appropriations allowing 35 hires to reach 115.
A Blytheville banquet brought together M Standley George Kirk J AC Sutterfield Earl Allen and Dr Chas Holman of St Louis as the group prepares to organize a new Kiwanis Club next week promising protection of the effort and community support.
Sikeston city council discussions on a municipal swimming pool site in Chamber of Commerce Park drew disapproval from Ward Four residents led by Theodore Kelly. The Junior Chamber of Commerce backed the $29,500 project with $4,000 in pledges and $5,000 from a prior bond issue, while the Board of Public Works offered $2,500 as support. WPA funds hinge on health board sanction and sponsor contributions.
Governor Stark's Kansas City police bill clears the House by 110 to 23 after a brief 12 minute debate. Supporters from Democrats and all 20 Republicans backed final passage and an emergency clause to take effect once Senate approval and the governor's signature arrive. Mrs A J Moore to visit Vincennes and Columbus with Norman Davis and Marvin McMullin appears in closing lines.
