Despite enrollment and aging facilities, Sikeston public schools prepare to graduate the largest senior class in history. Administration and board of education are proud of progress, aided by a citizens' advisory committee. Further population growth could speed modernization and a new high school.
President Eisenhower outlines an eight point platform stressing individual worth, national spirit, inclusive prosperity, compassionate government, principled courage, service over domination, strong defense, and freedom under God. He urges youth engagement and a crusading party organization to win hearts and minds for the Republicans.
Doctors report President Eisenhower has recovered from illness and his heart repaired itself after the attack. The public response is overwhelmingly positive with many deeming the news better than expected.
Mrs. Aubrey Steward formerly of Morehouse died in Cozad Nebraska. She was member of First Baptist church during four years at Morehouse. Survivors include husband two children Allen 6 Karen 4 two sisters Mrs Carl Crick and Mrs J C Shannon and two brothers Ray Wood Cecil Wood. VanDuser Vancuser High graduation week opens with baccalaureate 8 p.m. Sunday in the high school. Rev John McManus to deliver sermon. Commencement Wednesday 8 p.m. speaker Lynn Twitty superintendent Sikeston. Yvonne Griffin valedictorian Phyllis Prindle salutatorian.
A Butler County resident, living in a small town, asked the Poplar Bluff Credit Bureau by phone to record a credit rating while receiving Aid to Dependent Children funds. She said she had three children, no husband, and expected monthly increases to reach $200, aiming to graduate from the Missouri State Welfare Division in about five years, funded by taxpayers.
Charles Limbaugh, son of Mrs Lorene Limbaugh, has qualified for admittance to West Point. He graduates Sikeston High School class of 1956 and will receive official notice from West Point. Denton, exec VP Planters Bank Sikeston, named Council Jamboree chairman for Southeast Missouri Boy Scout Council. A Charleston School District bond election seeks 200000 for facilities. Court of Honor for Allen Malcolm and Mike Limbaugh featured Eagle Scout ranks and various merit badges.
Attendance figures at Sikeston Sunday schools on May 13 are listed for several churches including First Methodist 523, First Baptist a4, First Assembly of God -, Church of the Nazarene 734, Tanner St. Church of God 204, Sec. Gen. Baptist Church SA, and First Presbyterian 108.
The Sikeston Board of Education approved hiring ten teachers for the coming year as sixteen staffers exit at year end. High school gains include Marshall Fulbright and Howard Reed, while elementary hires feature Christine Davis and Louise Minner. The district also purchased two new school buses and discussed land acquisition with C.D. Matthews Realty. Graduation events and funding allocations for incidental, textbook, building, and veterans funds were announced.
Farmers invited to a May 31 9 am open house at Sikeston Experiment Field Missouri University route 61 south of Sikeston. Tour topics include wheat barley oats pasture tests and alfalfa varieties with a new cotton research program inspection of pesticide and fungicide-free plots and expert-led explanations.
Sikeston High School begins its 55th annual commencement week with a Sunday baccalaureate service in the high school auditorium. Rev. Harlow Donovan will deliver the address on Your Life Is Your Future. The service includes band, mixed chorus, invocation by Roy Vernon Guttenfelder, and benediction by Rev. Modavee. The 55th class is the largest in the school’s history, with outdoor ceremonies planned if weather permits.
The Retail Merchants Committee of the Chamber of Commerce, with city cooperation, opened a fully graded parking lot north of Sikeston near the Bel Rey Hotel. Merchants funded the graveled area, the city filled the old swimming pool site, and two lights were erected. The lot accommodates 100 cars and is free to the public.
Rotary Club hosts a fish fry at Shelter House near Areport School in city park. The event, organized by Homer Sealing and a committee including Dick Pormanville Pete Whle and Walter Seabre, starts around 4 gedia instead of a traditional indoor venue due to weather.
Clarence George Asmus 18 of Oran died after driving alone off Highway 55 four miles south of Chaffee midnight Saturday. His car rolled repeatedly, causing internal injuries. He died on arrival at St Francis Hospital Cape Girardeau. Born June 1, 1937 in Ovan he was survived by parents Mr. and Mrs. Adam Asmus, three brothers August Svilvenster and Alfred, two sisters Mrs Norman LeGrand and Agnes.
The annual meeting of the Scott County Tuberculosis Society was held Monday night at Half Way Cafe on Highway 61 North. JW Bonner was elected president succeeding Mrs. Mary Sehulii. Other officers: Al Westland first vice president Timae. Toaren Stalinas second vice president Sikeston. Mrs. Frank Steck third vice president Benton. Mrs Dorothy Garnett Sikeston recording secretary. Mrs Kathen Johnson Sikeston executive secretary. Chas. J. Blanton Jr. treasurer. A 1956 seal sale report showed $198.48 collected countywide with list of receipts by community including Bell City, Crain Cob, and others. Sikeston schools and Sikeston Women’s C. of C. reported.
In a late October meeting at the Rustic Rock Inn, farmers and county agents from four counties voted to hold Sikeston’s Feeder Pig Sale. The plan aims to provide pigs for FFA and 4 H Club youths and attract out of town buyers with 1000 pigs as a target, inviting E. Madison to advise on organizing a sale association.
Cletus Scherer of Benton died at home after a five year illness. Funeral services were held Wednesday at Saint Denis church Bent on and burial followed in the church cemetery. Survived by wife Celeste Fideric, six sons Charles James Thomas Cletus Harold and Dan, five daughters Greamy Ruth Ann Clara Celeste and Ann Senerer, his mother Mrs Mare Scherer, three brothers Felix Cyril and Svinester, and several grandchildren.
