Robert E. Hannegan is confirmed as Postmaster General by a 60 to 2 Senate vote with Taft and Donnell voting no. Other wartime notes include troop redeployments, 2,000,000 Army discharges planned, and Mount Suribachi flag victory commemorations.
Stores in Sikeston will close at 3:30 PM on Wednesday May 16 so residents are home when bond salesmen for the Mighty Seventh War Loan call. Sikeston aims 270000 and Scott County 575300 with EH bonds quota 431200. City Chairman J C Knupp leads a districted drive with captains and block workers.
Garland Hughes, Herald employee, enlisted in the Navy this week. He becomes the 52nd former Herald worker to join the armed forces during the current war.
Construction began Monday on a large concrete block warehouse at Harvey Parks Airport to store airplane parts for sale. The 800 by 125 foot building lies east of cadet barracks of the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics, parallel to the Missouri Pacific tracks, with engines and parts arriving from across the country. Local barracks will house the department offices as details remain undisclosed.
A meeting in Chaffee established the Southeast Missouri Junior Legion Softball League schedule with four teams Sikeston Jackson Chaffee and Cape Girardeau. Key dates include June 3 10 17 24 and July 1 plus a double header July 4 at the Cape Girardeau Legion picnic. The season winner advances to the State tournament in St Louis August 2. Wood flour will be produced in Blytheville Arkansas with a plant to be ready in 60 days from sawdust.
The war ends in Europe as German surrender is signed at Reims. Patton's Third Army and Soviet forces eliminate stubborn pockets in Czechoslovakia and Austria while troop demobilization plans unfold. Churchill confirms ongoing conscription for Japan. The article notes 40 million casualties and the shift to postwar recovery and repatriation.
President Truman calls the WWII victory over Germany a solemn hour and urges unity and labor to finish the war. He notes Eisenhower’s report of German surrender, praises providence, and emphasizes continuing effort to defeat Japan, rebuild a just peace, and bind wounds through hard work.
President Truman proclaims V E Day with a nationwide call to prayer and remembrance. He honors Allied victory in Europe, pledges unity for the Pacific theater, and designates Sunday May 15 1945 as a day of prayer to thank God and honor fallen servicemembers.
In Sikeston the V E Day mood was reverent and restrained. Radios and bells announced victory at 8 am while churches held prayers and services. Most businesses closed. liquor stores shut. only faint firecracker sounds pierced the city as residents reflected on the German surrender.
Four hundred B 29s of the Army Air Forces blasted three Japanese islands early today targeting air fields, supply centers and oil refineries as heavy anti aircraft fire proved largely ineffective. The attack was described as the heaviest yet unleashed on the Japanese Empire while ground combat in Okinawa near Naha continued with fierce resistance and inch by inch advances. In the Philippines, Samar and Mindanao faced invasion actions by US forces, and Tarakan Island near Borneo neared completion with allied troops seizing key oil fields and derricks damaged but salvageable.
Roosevelt Artis a 20 year old Negro youth was instantly killed when a cabin on the Spurlin Beck farm near Matthews was demolished by a freak high wind. His uncle Robert Jones and aunt were injured slightly, his mother Daisy Baker lives in Sikeston. The storm also damaged the Beck residence and farm buildings including a blown barn on Edward Binford’s adjoining property. A horse died and equipment was damaged.
A 60 acre crimson clover field north of Sikeston, planted by district farmer Bill Baker, draws admiration from highway travelers. The crop will be seed with stubble plowed to fertilize the next crop. Prof. C A Helm and J R Dixie Paulling of the Missouri College of Agriculture deem it outstanding. They credit seed bed preparation, inoculation and plant food as key factors.
