Hearing For St. Louisians Set For Today at Hayti
A preliminary hearing before Magistrate Sam J. Corbett in Hayti is set for today for three St. Louisans charged with murder in the fatal shooting of Frank Vassallo, a taxi company supervisor. Defendants are George A. Harvill William J H Saunders and Mrs Nancy Garner Bell. Vassallo was shot as he fled a tourist court where he had registered with a woman.

Former Sikestonian Hears from Husband Held POW in Korea
Mrs. Mattie Moore White formerly Sikeston received a letter from her husband Pfc. Durwood White a prisoner in a North Korean war camp. White, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ray White Sikeston Route 3, was captured last April and his wife now lives in Torrance California. The letter dated January 15 said he had mail from his wife and mother. A relative serving in Korea had earlier feared he was prisoner. The POW status was confirmed when the Reds released a list in December. He married Miss Mattie Moore Sikeston shortly before deployment.

Concert Membership Drive Begins Today

Widen U.S. 61 in Scott County bid request
The State Highway Commission seeks bids by April 2 to widen about 13 miles of U S Route 61 from Ancell through Benton to Morley. A 20 foot portland cement roadway will be widened four feet and resurfaced with asphalt to a 24 foot travel lane. The project is part of 373.5 miles of road work in 42 counties, estimated at more than 2.5 million dollars.
