Opposes Missouri Tax Commission farm valuation increases seen as biased against Southeast Missouri. Criticizes selective 26 county scope, questioning governor and commission origins, impact on real estate and public utilities, and regional burden.
At the Jaycees regular meeting in the Country Club Jim Bonner and Louis Jones reported the rodeo committee recommends accepting producer Tommy Steiner’s contract for the third annual Jaycee Bootheel Rodeo set for Sept. 2 3 4 and 5. Steiner’s company will provide 18 grand entry horses 30 bareback broncs 30 saddle broncs 25 Brahma bulls 25 bull-dogging steers and 50 roping calves. The group also discussed sponsoring the Propbusters Hobby Club inviting their officers to a future Jaycees dinner to hear plans. A demand to repair street signs prompted a council appearance next session.
Weather bureau at Cairo reports the river crest expected Saturday reaching about 43.5 feet, 3% feet above flood stage. Little damage reported near Cairo beyond some flooded low lying farms as the river begins to fall at Dam 51, Paducah, with Cairo still ris ing until Saturday.

Engineers will oversee a flood control meeting in Charleston on March 30 with many officials expected. The session reviews Mississippi River projects from Cape Girardeau south, including floodways reservoirs and floodwalls under consideration. Also to be discussed are channel dredging and bank protection work.
John Denman and Mrs Denman formerly Miss Jean Giesel of Sikeston now in St Louis had paintings flown from Tokyo to New York for an exhibition reported by the New York Herald Tribune on February 20. The Denmans own the works and the exhibit is staged in New York galleries.
A large turnout from Scott County and nearby areas filled the Magistrate Court room to protest tax valuation hikes. A 10-member delegation will travel to Jefferson City at 7:30 p m Wednesday to support Judge L D Lankford and Judge R Q Black and county officials before the State Tax Commission seeking at least partial relief from 35 percent city and 95 percent farm valuation increases. The meeting, led by C E Daddy Felker, urged reconsideration and endorsed a county resolution demanding a survey based reassessment reflecting nonland factors and existing drainage funding.
Mrs. Roger Bailey spoke on Religion at the Coalesce Club meeting held Monday at the Rustic Rock Inn. She framed religion as a river with Buddhism Islam Hinduism and Christianity as tributaries, centering on Jesus as the Light of the World. Twenty members attended, two new members joined, and plans for next month feature Jean Bell Moseley from Cape Girardeau.
Miss Willadean Richards who will wed Bill Stearns was feted at a Dunn Hotel shower Monday attended by about 40 guests. Hostesses included Misses Wadine Malcolm Ann Gentry Carolyn Jackson Virginia Hambrick Ja net Lewis Peggy Knapp Joan Hill Juanita Matthews and Mrs Pat Nickens. A blue and white color theme and a gift opening preceded by a song about the couple.
Sixty nine members attended the Rustic Rock Inn Tuessar night as Kiwanis clubs marked St Patrick’s Day with the annual Ladies Night. Kathrin Clark performed an Irish medley and Dick Brean with his wife Betty sang Irish numbers including Danny Boy.
Voters in Poplar will decide in the April 3 school election on a levy set at 810 dollars, which is 10 cents less than the amount approved last spring. The measure aims to trim the prior levy while maintaining school funding levels.

The Future Homemakers of America district meeting will be held Saturday March 19 at Southeast Missouri State College in the Academic Hall auditorium Cape Girardeau beginning at 9 30 AM. Each chapter to send one voting delegate for officer elections and one delegate for the business meeting. Members should bring 25 cent registration and a sack lunch. An interesting program and important business are planned to benefit attendees.
A hospital school announces a career day with a registered nurse to interview students. Young women around age 14 to 18 can participate, learning about nursing education and potential paths. The event features demonstrations and personal conversations with RN staff.
Members of the Junior Woman's Club enjoyed a Tuesday evening program on art at the library led by guest speaker Mrs. Kelsey Short. Attendees drew as students under her guidance and reviewed writings by Sikeston artists. President Mrs Ralph Boyer led the meeting and introduced Frank Frankfurther who spoke on the Associated Gas Law. The group set a meeting for April 11 with the Coalesce Club or a program by Jean Bell Moseley of Cape Girardeau, then adjourned to refreshments hosted by Mrs Glenn Forbis and Miss Bertha Mae Joyce.

Seven arrests in St Louis linked to an interstate auto theft ring with 122 cars recovered. FBI agent J. E. Milnes says two suspects, Sam O Hayes and James Stephens, both St Louis residents, were arrested, with five others having been arrested earlier. Tulsa reports place charges against Hayes and Stephens in federal war crimes files related to the Deer Act. Authorities aim to recover about 89 remaining stolen vehicles.
Bert Femmer of New Madrid announced Melvin Dace of Sikeston as drillmaster for a mounted patrol to be sponsored by SEMO Shrine Club. A 7:30 p.m. Friday meeting at Sikeston Masonic Temple invites potential riders to join. The patrol plans uniformed riders with regalia for area parades and Shrine parades in Memphis and St Louis.
