United States forces dispatched an immense armada of 1600 to 2000 planes to strike Berlin for a third time in five days. The operation left 38 bombers and 16 fighters lost, while escorting fighters downed 83 enemy aircraft. Bombers dropped 2000 tons of high explosives and 350000 incendiaries on key targets.
A humorous notice warns readers that the tax filing deadline is next Wednesday 1943 income tax returns must be filed. It jokes about the stress and urges timely payment, noting early filers may feel ahead while others suffer the rush and brainwork.
Yeoman Donna Miller and Louis Corbett will visit Sikeston to explain Navy Waves life and work. They will be at the post office Saturday from 9 to 1, with private appointments available by calling Mrs. H. L. Harty. Eligible ages 20 to 36. Sikeston has three Waves Ella Louise Lutz Mildred Mathis and Martha Jane Stokely, serving at Lambert Field Norfolk and Hunter College respectively.

Sikeston city council reduced the police chief salary from 125 to 50 per month at Monday's meeting amid a mayoral race with candidates Harold Wallace and Roy Beck vying for the post. The ordinance sets the new pay to take effect from the start of the next city marshal term on April 4, 1944, as Walter Kendall is also a potential candidate. The session also directed enforcement actions on burned cabins, sewer connections, bee-keeping, sidewalk repairs, and a right of way for a sewer line, plus ordinances on Sunset Addition curfew and Sunset police assignment.

Lieut DeWint H Zaricor son of Mr and Mrs H M Zaricor of Sikeston has been awarded the Air Medal and Oak Leaf Cluster for meritorious action in sustained combat missions in the South Pacific with the 18th Army Air Forces. Presentation was made February 5 by Lieut Gen Millard F Harmon on Roosevelt's direction. He is a fighter pilot who received his wings at Phoenix about a year ago and is married to Miss Annette Watkins of Oran.
Lieut Harold Nus formerly listed as MIA returns to the United States in the South Pacific theater where he earned the Distinguished Flying Cross the Air Medal and two Oak Leaf Clusters for his role in the Pacific air war His wife Mrs Mary Botter will join him in Springfield while he receives treatment at O Reilly Hospital They plan to visit Sikeston next week and his mission plane Mary Ellen bore his wife s name
Aviation Cadet Fred Schorle Jr. of Sikeston, son of Mr and Mrs Fred F Schorle of St Louis, was killed Monday night when two twin engined training planes at Blytheville Army Air Field collided near Jericho Arkansas. He would have earned his wings next week. Instructors and students in both planes perished. wreckage scattered over a quarter square mile. Funeral held in St Louis with E F Schorle of Sikeston in attendance. OPA chief Bowles says price controls saved nation 89 billion dollars through 1913 in radio address.
Sikeston’s Red Cross War Fund drive, in its second day, has raised $4283 of an $8370 quota. Large industrial donations are expected. Inclement weather hindered canvassing of business and residential areas. Ward and committee names listed. War Fund Chairman R. M. Talbert and Scott County Chair John J. Reiss preside. Local Red Cross office on Center Street reports extensive service to military families and prisoners of war.
Judge J. C Mc Dowell presided as parole reports and routine business dominated the opening of Scott County Circuit Court on Monday. Sentences included Elmer Jones two years in Algoa Reformatory for burglary and larceny, Paul Arnold paroled to Wm Head, two years in the Penitentiary for transporting stolen property. Jake Hart’s weapons charge nolle pressed. Killian and Martin released from parole after routine reports. Several divorces dismissed or granted, including Alice Thompson for divorce from Odis Thompson with custody of a minor. Civil cases dismissed for want of prosecution. Murder charge against Tretha Williams set for Thursday, March 16, venue from New Madrid.
Scott county will christen a third plane an ambulance aircraft joining two combat ships named City of Sikeston and Sikeston Bulldog created through a war bond drive led by Sikeston school children. A special committee will choose the final name from county school submissions mailed to Sikeston High School Principal Tharon Stallings by March 20.
Meteorologist Albert Klamm forecasts cold clear today turning cloudy with rain Friday night and Saturday. Sunday will be warmer and fair. Earlier this week the low fell to 23 degrees and the high reached 64 last Friday. President Roosevelt and family prayed for peace at White House services marking the eleventh inauguration anniversary.
