The War Department announced that army officers eligible by age for retirement will be relieved of duty by December 31 except those essential to the war effort or in special positions. General officers may be retained only with department approval in cases where essential to the war effort.
In Sikeston Mill A and Dexter plant workers resumed duties after a walkout begun Tuesday in protest of a War Labor Board higher pay ruling. The WPB upheld a 24.5 cent hourly increase, exceeding the union's demand of 15 cents and company offer of 5 cents. A Telegram from WPB disputes director urged compliance and cited disruption of vital food supplies.
Sikeston voters decide between council members Lynn Waggener and Marvin Carroll for mayor with polls open until 8 35 pm. Both candidates are on the city council and acting mayor Carroll has filled the post since the prior death. election officials named for each ward include list of observers and clerks.
The Charles H. Butlers real estate office sold twelve houses in seven days, including ten Benton Street homes originally built for housing shortages at the Missouri Institute of Aeronautics. Buyers included Mrs. Bonnie Woods Mrs. Letitia Jones and A le Roberts along with other transfers on Murray Lane and Vernon Avenue totaling about $50 000.
General Mark Clark announced that American occupation of Italy will end the first of the year. The Fifth Army, which conquered and has occupied Italy, will be transferred to Austria with headquarters at Vienna.
Rumor says V. P Boisaubin former State Highway Patrol trooper died while flying "the hump" in India. Mrs Boisaubin and children here have no official word. Congressman John Cochran says Boisaubin’s name not on casualty list.
Postmaster Malcolm hosted a Lions Club luncheon for Southeast Missouri postmasters on Tuesday. Topics included mail handling methods and other postal matters. Attendees were Albert Allen, Oliver Cook, Eugene Jandall, Sam Downing, Max Clodfelter, Charles Oliver, Otto Piedterkorn, and James Sharp.
Sikeston will close for Independence Day July 4. The holiday is expected to mirror last year as the safest and sanest celebration. The main event is a Veterans of Foreign Wars picnic and barbecue in Malone Park plus activities supervised by the VFW Auxiliary.
Miss Helen Kerr a 20 year old employee of International Shoe Company Sikeston plant is hospitalized with serious injuries after an accident Monday morning. Her scalp was torn by revolving machinery and she suffered burns and cuts from a hot pipe and debris. She remained conscious and walked to the car for transport.
Sgt. Charles Graham Lindley telephoned his parents in Sikeston from Miami after arriving from overseas. He served 23 months with the Air Transport Command on the Gala Coast in Africa and seven months with Air Transport Command personnel in Aden Protectorate Arabia. He is expected home July 4.
The nine week United Nations Conference in San Francisco closes with the signing of a world charter to preserve peace and security. President Truman pledges immediate Senate ratification and urges rapid approval by other nations as the document seeks to unify free peoples against tyranny and advance global progress.

The July term docket includes murder, robbery, and forgery cases, many holdovers from earlier terms. Notable charges involve Gobel Owings over a fatal dispute at Luther Glass's gambling house, and rape cases against Sikeston youths C Bauggus and Kenneth Dickson, plus Frank Williams. Some trials may wait until the defendants are present or located.
War loan chairmen C H Butler of Scott county and J Q Knapp of Sikeston appeal for 770 volunteers to invest 80 625 in E bonds by July 7. They plan varied bonds from 25 to 1000 dollars to cover Sikeston's deficit and meet the Mighty Seventh drive goals.
Myers, an insurance merchant, was elected president of the Sikeston Lions Club at the organization's luncheon at the Dunn Hotel yesterday noon. He will be installed later, succeeding E. H. Berry. Other new officers include T E Stallings as first vice president Herb Walton as second vice president Ted Kirby as third vice president J F Cox Jr as tail twister A P Veasman as lion tamer and Roger Bailey and Dr W A Anthony as directors. Edward Seymour, just returned from a German prison camp, attended and spoke briefly along with Postmaster Pleas Malcolm and visiting postmasters from nearby towns.
General Douglas MacArthur announced the liberation of Luzon as the largest single Allied victory in the Southwest Pacific. American forces recaptured Luzon on January 8 with heavy Japanese losses estimated at over 113,000 dead, thousands captured, and American losses totaling 3,793 dead, 11,351 wounded, and 34 missing. China Wants More Help. Chiang Kai Shek urged renewed lend lease to aid China, arguing it is cheaper than deploying further U.S. troops. Japanese coastal defense preparations signaled a potential Allied invasion.
Last winter Sikeston residents were urged to donate used clothing to aid war-torn countries. The Boy Scout house to house drive collected about six hundred pounds, stored at the Sikeston Gin Company on North Street.
Disagreement over authority to inspect frozen food lockers pits OPA investigators against Poplar Bluff health officers. Butler County Ration Board chair Joseph Ashcroft offered to fund a physical exam to align inspectors with state law, but OPA enforcement chief George L Robertson refused. Federal court order reportedly backs the OPA, while City Health Engineer Claude E. Murray says inspections will continue unless restrained. Murray notes proprietors did not object, and will enforce the law to prevent contaminated handling. Robertson says the court order will be served today. further steps depend on the health officer.
F D Lair is gravely ill at his North New Madrid Street home with his condition unchanged despite earlier reports of improvement. His son J J Lair, who has been with the Seabees in the East, is due to return home tomorrow morning.

Maurice Stewart of Sikeston re-elected recording secretary and A AO Harrison Sikeston treasurer. Sikeston women investigate easiest way to join soldier husbands in Germany during the occupation. About half register with Cross for updates, hoping to accompany their spouses overseas if allowed. Uncertainty remains whether time with husbands will be permitted amid a potential two to three year separation. Mrs John Kelly and son Robert of Memphis visit Mr Owens. Mrs Bartley Schewegl er entertained guests at a West Gladys home.
