State Highway Patrol records a deadly weekend with a seven car pile up south of New Madrid and a hit and run near Portageville. Victims include Angela Julius aged 4 from Paxico and William Ball 18 of Malden, with several others hospitalized and a 9 year old girl in serious condition.
Aloert Hart Stepp, 61, a lifelong farmer of New Madrid, died at his home Tuesday at 5 p.m. after ten weeks of illness from virus pneumonia. Born June 12, 1896, he was the son of Mrs. Ida H. Stepp and the late Albert A. Stepp. He was preceded in death by a brother, J. Lilbourn Stepp, and survived by his mother and a niece, Mrs. Harold Aston of Norwalk, Ohio.
About 35 teachers from Missouri, Kansas, Michigan and Canada arrive in Sikeston July 2 for the annual Missouriana tour. James M. Beaird says they will dine at Rustic Rock Inn at 6:30 p.m. with W. B. Denton giving the invocation and Mayor Butler delivering a city progress review. Harold Mill speaks on The Cotton Story with a cotton motion picture, followed by a Missour State Chamber reply by Ross Anderson.

Ground breaking for Potlatch Forests Inc new paper conversion plant in Sikeston drew over a score of local officers, bankers, and civic groups. Alavor Chas Butler handled the first shovel as Ray Clinton Construction crews began a tilt up concrete building planned at 160 by 380 feet with future expansion behind it. The plant aims to produce milk cartons and paper stock for shipment, with operations starting on one shift and scaling to three shifts by full production, employing about 100 workers. Local officials voiced pride at the site chosen after inspections of many communities, and Rev. J C Montgomery led a dedicatory invocation at the ceremony.
A sightseeing tour of the Scott County Lake site east of Chaffee is planned for next Sunday afternoon at 2 oclock. Secretary Brick Stermle of the executive committee will conduct the tour and the general public is invited to attend. Despite heavy rains slowing work, progress is evident and the lake is expected to be finished in July or early August if weather cooperates.
Russell Loren Somers, 20, a former Gray Ridge and Bloomfield resident who attended Bloomfield High School, was among four U.S. soldiers killed in an accidental high explosive shell blast at Fort Sill Oklahoma. He had been stationed in Colorado and recently moved to Fort Sill. He was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Russell Somers of Rosenburg Texas, with family ties in Gray Ridge and Bloomfield. Additional relatives include J. P. Edwards and Leta McCollum, aunt in Sikeston, and the late W. C. Edwards, also of Sikeston.
Mrs Iris Drake and Mrs Jessie Hawkins have been hired as librarians at Canalou and Matthews. Mass Leola Owen is vacationing in the Ozarks. New Books include A Woman Doctor Looks At Love by Marion Hillard a guide on women's issues. The Conqueror's Wife by Neel B Gerson depicts Matilda and William's rise to English throne and Hastings. Silver Spoon by Edwie Gilbert follows Grace Anders and John Gowden at Glenway estate.
C E Felker longtime county collector proposed immediate payment of 10000 and escrow of 35284.58 at Bank of Sikeston to cover funds in a pending Missouri county collectors lawsuit. Judge Lankford accepted the plan, which covers excess fees and political subdivisions for 1953 54 55 but excludes 1947 52.
White attendants at Duke's Shell Station on Highway 61 South reported a theft Saturday afternoon. A person slipped into the office and took about $200 from the register, according to Co. O. Duke. Deputy Dysart investigated a carload of colored people seen nearby, but no arrest was made.
Frances Williams Overton 28 a former Matthews resident and East St Louis mother of four drowned Sunday on a two day fishing trip with husband Lauie Overton. They camped on Silver Creek near Lebanon Al. Her body was recovered within an hour by volunteer Lebanon firemen. She was daughter of George Williams and Mrs Williams of Sikeston and leaves husband four children two parents five brothers and one sister.
Al Westland, longtime Sikeston Herald reporter and ad solicitor, has accepted a position as instructor in journalism at Memphis State University starting September 1. He came to the Herald in 1950 from the University of Missouri School of Journalism. Westland will teach news writing, radio news, and pictorial journalism as Memphis State becomes a university on July 1.
