Private Alney Lee Tanner, 22, of Sikeston, and Lieut. Ralph Guy La Baw, 32, of Lincoln Illinois, died when a government plane crashed onto a farm in Madison County. The aircraft circles preceded a nose dive from about 1500 feet, burying its nose in a tomato patch on William Loehring’s farm.

Second lieutenant La Baw of GHQ Air Force and Tanner of the Fifteenth Observation Squadron died when an O-19 biplane crashed near Scott Field in clear conditions. The eight year old aircraft broke apart on impact. both bodies were recovered in seats with parachutes attached. An Army Board opened an investigation while services were planned at Nazarene Church with interment in Carpenter Cemetery. Tanner, color blind, had been studying aircraft mechanics and planned further service or work in aviation after his 1937 enlistment.

Former Bartender Sought in Manslaughter Case
John Burnett, a former bartender at Joyner's Tavern on Malone Avenue, faces a fugitive warrant for voluntary manslaughter issued by Judge Sterling Hunter. The charge stems from the July incident in Sikeston in which William Swinney died from injuries after a confrontation outside the Gables. Witnesses reported Burnett struck Swinney during an altercation in front of the tavern. Swinney died days later at Southeast Missouri Hospital in Cape Girardeau. Burnett, about 30, reportedly fled hours after the incident and remains at large.

George Latham 28, window trimmer and sign painter for Cut Rate stores, ended his life Sunday in Blytheville Arkansas by ingesting poison after a day of moodiness. He traveled with Arnold Schwab and two Sikeston women, Wilma Johnson and Theola Kaiser, stopping for supper at Rustic Inn. He drank poison in a rest room after ordering a cigar, said two bottles were consumed, and died at Wall Hospital. He left Cape Girardeau parents and siblings, was unmarried, and funeral services were held at Red Star Baptist church with burial in Fairview cemetery. Fall From Truck Fatal To Farmer Algie Felker
Algie Felker 51 of Vanduser died from a fractured skull after falling from the rear of a pickup en route from Oran to Vanduser. Dewey Norman, driver, stopped at Bell City intersection. Felker, riding in back with two others, was thrown out and died six hours later after a coma. He was born July 13, 1887, and survived by brothers, a son, a San Francisco resident, and multiple Caruth and Vanduser relatives. An inquest by Dr. John Wilson ruled death accidental.

EP Coleman completed marketing a twenty acre field of sweet corn grown nine miles west of Sikeston in Stoddard County. The harvest sold in Chicago, shipped in seven trailer trucks, each carrying 1250 dozen ears, at 16 cents a dozen. The crop yielded 105000 ears, enough for that many appetites at one meal.
