The body of Fay R. Pete Petty of Tiptonville, drowned when the ferry tow boat Eleanor D owned by the Tennessee Missouri Bridge Commission sunk after a collision with the Cape Zephyr from St. Louis, was recovered at 11 a.m. Monday. Captain Leonard Houchin's Cape Zephyr collided with the Eleanor D early Sunday near midstream, trapping Petty in the pilot house. divers and heavy salvage efforts recovered the body as crews pulled the sunken vessel to shallower water.
County assessor Alfred Halter reports total property valuations in Scott County for 1956 will surpass 32 million dollars, up from 1955, with gains in rural acres city lots and personal property. Joshua Burton Simpson a retired farmer and longtime Charleston resident died at Delta Community Hospital in Sikeston at 4 30 a m He was born July 4 1868 in Mount Airy North Carolina and came to Mississippi county in 1896 He survives his wife Miss Mattie Perryman and his children Mary Lee Simpson and H Simpson Sr A grandson and two great grandchildren also survive The body will lie in state at Nunnelee Funeral Home with funeral at First Baptist Church 230 Friday afternoon followed by interment in the Odd Fellows cemetery
Walter John D Little, Sikeston’s last horse drawn drayman, turns 89 on Friday July 13 at his son in law Fred Cooley’s home. Born Sept 13 1865 near Clinton Kansas, he moved to Sikeston after marrying Hettree McBride in 1892 and spent his career with Scott County Milling Company. He hauled bricks for Sikeston’s first paved street and theatre, and the old city hall lumber. Two of his eight children survive.

City Clerk John Vaughn reports that the final day for voter registration drew over 400 last minute applicants under the new law. No registrations are accepted until after the August primaries, with new registrations allowed again up to 28 days before the November general election.

He noted soil nutrient removal by a bale and the cost to replace it, underscoring cotton as a major cash crop and industry fact.
