F E Snider of Ramfre Press announces the publication of Otto Kochtitzky's memoirs titled The Story of a Busy Life. The 176 page hardbound book includes maps, illustrations, and a portrait, tracing Southeast Missouri’s transformation and the Little River Drainage District history. Proceeds support regional history, with the district charter renewed in perpetuity.
Mr and Mrs A D Hill of Sikeston Route 1 celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary with a family dinner on Saturday July 6. All their children and relatives attended including Bernice Johnson and daughters Kathy Bernita and Jane Elton James Hull and daughters Jeanie and Vicke Hayward Brewer and children Johnny David Jimmy Peggs Ann Cecil Dorothy Vkuito and children Theresa Greg and Sarah Ann Howard Peters Michael from Indianapolis Relatives from St Louis Matthews and Sikeston also attended or called in during the afternoon.
Area students at the University of Missouri at Columbia were named in the Honors Booklet for the 1956-57 year, with many scholastic honorees posting GPAs of 2.75 or above. Freshmen from Missouri’s Bootheel and nearby areas earned Curator’s scholarships for high school achievement. numerous students across Colleges of Arts and Science, Medicine, Nursing, Engineering, Education, Business, and public administration appear with specific names and cities.
The Country Court of Scott County plans a permanent food distribution center in Benton with the first distribution from the center likely in August. The exact site will be announced later.
Cape Girardeau and surrounding towns list prize recipients and scholarship winners across multiple fields. William Lee Porter earns Sigma Delta Chi Prize. Richard Hugene Sniner cited for Missouri Law Review. Army ROTC and various music and merit awards granted to students from Cape Girardeau, Dexter, Sikeston, Bragg City, New Madrid, and Clarkson. Named donors include Sears Roebuck, Kroger, Mortar Board, and others.
CHAFFEE Mrs Helen Craff 3%, mother of William Craff, who formerly lived in Sikeston and operated a garage, died at her home here at 3 50 pm Monday after three years illness following a stroke in 1954. Born March 1 1901 at Samoth II, daughter of Wir and Mrs O G Catler. On April 25 1922 she married W A Craft who survives. The farmula came to Chaffee where they lived except for a interval of several years spent at Batesville Ark. Other survivors are two grand children.
First polio case reported this summer in Cape Girardeau at St Francis Hospital. Eugenia Fyffe, eight, daughter of Eugene Fyffe of Bermuda, admitted with stiff back and neck and muscle spasms but no paralysis. She had two polio vaccines, one in December and one in March. Last year at this time ten cases reported in district. in 1955, fourteen.
Ada Adeline Welty of 506 Fletcher street died Monday morning at Doctors Hospital Poplar Bluff after a heart ailment. Born March 12, 1887 in Florence Alabama she moved to Missouri at age six. Survived by three daughters Coral Paine Ruby Bradles and Opal Nichols all of Sikeston four grandchildren and one great grandchild. husband died in 1925. son William Welty killed in WWII. Funeral held at Nunnelee Chapel with burial in Garden of Memories.
Jim Beaird announces a farming opportunity in Overland Missouri with a potential contract for okra. James M Beaird says a contract for okra and a guaranteed 125 per half bushel awaits. Patterson Bain from the College of Agriculture says seed grants by July 15 and 350 bushels per acre expected.
Mrs. Robert Hope will attend a Missouri PTA workshop for all council presidents and county chairmen. The event runs July 16 to 18 on the University of Missouri Columbia campus, sponsored by the Missouri Congress of Parents and Teachers with special consultant Mrs. Eillen Dell Bieler of the National Congress of P T. Planning is led by Mrs Henry Carr of Springfield with a committee including Mrs Homer Kesterson and others from St Louis Mexico and Clinton.
Robert J. Genins resigns after six years as administrator of Missouri Delta Community Hospital effective Sept 1 and will move to Chicago to join the Methodist Church lay program as associate secretary for Stewardship Cultivation. The Sikeston community expresses deep regret while praising his service to the hospital and area.

Joseph Lafay ette Morgan a retired East Prairie farmer died Monday at Mt Carmel Hospital in Detroit He had been living with his son Winfred Morgan in Lansing Michigan visiting daughter Mrs Bltlie Winton in Troy He was born April 12 1880 in Blackford Kentucky He married Iva Mertie McElmurry December 53 1906 who preceded him in death in 189 His survivors include another son Harley Morgan of Lexington Kentucky six grandchildren and four great grandchildren The body will arrive at Shel by Funeral Home Wednesday after 10 am Services are Thursday at 2 pm at Shelby Funeral Chapel Rev Gur Brown officiating Burial in Odd Fellows Cemetery.
Oran ORAN July 17 the Scott County Homemakers will gather in the Oran High School Home Economics Room. The nutrition meeting runs from 10:00 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. with Flora Carl of the University of Missouri presenting the lesson. Local foods leaders are urged to attend and a noon meal will be served.
Thirty nine locals took driver and written tests at the Sikeston Armory on Monday. Twenty seven passed the tests, five filed road exams, two did the written law tests, and five were incomplete. Nine instruction permits were issued and seven vehicles deemed defective by the state patrol.
Miss June Castleberry, daughter of Mrs. Estel Demars, attending Pontiac Business School, was elected secretary of Tau Beta Gamma Sorority. She will return home this weekend and remain until after the wedding of her twin sister Miss Jean Castleberry to Marshall Feisler, planned for June 20.

Aged Daisy Shaw 75 perished in a house blaze near Dearmont Oliver in the Pinhook area eight miles south. Neighbors raised alarm but rescue failed. Coroner Elgin McAnkle ruled burns cause of death no inquest. Born 1890 in Calhoun City, Miss. Survived by two daughters and 12 grandchildren. Graveside rites set at Oak Grove Cemetery Charleston with Shelly Funeral Home handling services.
The Missouri State Highway Commission issued a call for bids on July 25 for state highway improvements across 104 miles in 24 counties and St Louis City. The sole major system project is a Ban on the Daniel Boone Expressway in St Louis City, involving 0.9 mile of paving, bridges, retaining walls, and two 24 foot Portland cement concrete pavements from the west city limits to Red Feather Expressway, plus four bridge structures including McCausland, Clayton, Oakland, and Ramp A connections.

Senton Pail Waidman Jr., county clerk, reports the State Tax Commission ordered a 5 percent increase in cattle assessments from 284,969 and a 20 percent rise in hog assessments from 47,802 while real estate rural property and town lots remain unchanged. Similar orders have been issued in other counties.
