Mrs Vodrel Kirby and Mrs George Lufey were installed as Noble Grand and Vice Grand in a joint Rebekah and Odd Fellows ceremony at the 1.C.C.F. Hall Tuesday night. Installation by District deputy Velma Sizemore. guests from Charleston, Morehouse and East Prairie attended. About 145 meals served after in the dining hall with themed decorations for both orders.

Hog Prices Dip To 24 Month Low At National Stock Yards
Hog receipts at National Stock Yards in the first week of the year pushed prices to their lowest in 24 months. Cattle and lambs showed mixed to stronger moves while hogs on hand rose to about 50 300 head week totals. Barrows and gilts off 50 to 75 cents with sows down 25 cents, low top at 18 35 cwt. Veal declined to 32 for prime few, while high choice steers reached 29 and many beeves 21 to 24.

Fatal Wreck on Highway 60 Claims Sikeston Man
J James Williams a 37 year old iron worker from Sikeston and Harold Evans 24 of 628 Vernon St were fatally and critically injured respectively when their car rear ended an unlit trailer truck driven by Cleon Gann Osceola Ark on Highway 60 near Watt Junction. Williams died soon after admission at St. Marys Cairo Ill while Evans remained in critical condition. Gann was arrested and jailed at Charleston awaiting Evans outcome. Williams survived by his wife four sons a daughter and siblings. Body to Nunnelee Funeral Chapel Charleston then Newport Ark with service at Lee's Chapel Tuckerman Ark.

Four County Area Produces 3529 Acres of Rice
The four county area Scott, Stoddard, New Madrid and Mississippi produced 3529 acres of rice in 1954 according to county extension agents. Voting on rice marketing quotas for 1955 will take place Friday Jan 28 in each county at the ASC office with landowners tenants or sharecroppers eligible. Stoddard led with 1994 acres on 17 farms, New Madrid had 815 acres on five farms, Scott had 50 acres on two farms, Mississippi had 22 acres on one farm.

Night Watchman Fires On Prowler At Junk Yard
Earnie E. Merick, 36, of Sikeston, was wounded in a shooting at Eakins Junk Yard around 7:30 p.m. Tuesday when night watchman Delmar Pyatt, in the yard office, ordered him to stop and Merick flashed a flashlight. Pyatt fired a shotgun wounding Merick in the back and thighs. Merick was hospitalized at Missouri Delta Community Hospital and likely to be held on charges. Deputies are investigating with Sheriff John Dennis and Paul Eakins.

At 10 20 a m Wednesday the fire department answered a call to 723 Matthews St the home of Rev and Mrs Robert I Jones where an overheated oil stove set off an alarm. Rev and Mrs Jones were burned out of their home on Bonus Hill the prior Sunday night. A 6 30 a m call Wednesday sent fire crews to the Powder Puff Beauty Salon 515 Greer St for a small fire from a defective flue with no damage. Tuesday afternoon Assistant Fire Chief Jack Johnson drove a truck toward Charleston to assist in a blaze at Joe Stricker s home three miles south of Lusk Chapel.

More than 300 exhibits of farm crops seeds have been received for the Missouri Seed Improvement Association annual Good Seed Show to be held at Sikeston National Guard Armory on Wednesday Jan 26. Soybeans lead with 104 exhibits followed by cotton seed wheat and other grains. Exhibits tested for purity and germination by the University of Missouri College of Agriculture. Distinguished farm authorities will speak on seed topics including Field Crop Practices in Italy and Good Soybean Production Practices in Southeast Missouri. Recognition dinner awards include members of the 100-Bushel Corn Club and 40-Bushel Wheat Club. Event sponsored by Sikeston Chamber of Commerce with cooperation from the University of Missouri College of Agriculture.
