Mrs Kimball Mrs Hardesty and Harry Hardesty were taken to East Missouri Hospital in La Bardeau. Mr Hardesty and the children were returned home in Campbell. The accident occurred when a truck left the road and overturned in a ditch.
The Sikestone Auction Company succeeds the partnership of R. A. Moard and Glenn Matthews who ran public auctions biweekly at the Matthews Wagon Yard since last spring, continuing the auction tradition under a new firm name.
In Sikeston, three youths Jake Hart Buck Carter and Buck Oliver connected with a November last year offense at Keaton Grocery warehouse were in session Monday for hearings. Carter was granted a new March term hearing with $500 bond while Hart was paroled to G W Kirk with $300 bond. Oliver opted for March term trial. Phillips’ reformatory sentence starts at the conviction date.
M Murray, chief engineer for the Mississippi Cotton Seed Products Co and supervisor of eighteen cotton seed oil mills, died at 52 in Jackson Miss of heart trouble. Survived by wife and son. Funeral held Friday at his former Jackson Tenn home. Sikeston Mill officials attended.
Effective yesterday, Potashnick Truck Service of Sikeston and Bryant Truck Lines of Charleston form a controlling interest in Bryant Truck Lines. The new combination will include Charleston and Potashnick operations in a Southeast expansion to achieve economy of scale and efficiency.
Three men traveling to Sileston in a car from Sedalia were injured when the vehicle left the road near Fredericktown and overturned after a rear tire blew out. Broekers, a 53 year old Acme Broom Co. salesman, sustained minor wounds, Heard suffered a broken leg, and Taylor a head injury.
Two cars were damaged but the drivers were uninjured after a collision on a bridge four miles west of Sikeston. Kennett Taylor and Alton Blackman with Claude Blackman, all from Dexter, drove a 1935 Chevrolet truck and a 1935 Plymouth sedan. Both vehicles left the bridge and overturned into the ditch below. State Highway Patrol provided limited details.
Statewide license plates went on sale January 1 with about 75 sold on opening day in Sikeston. Arthur’s Service Station on North Kingshighway served as district sales HQ. Plates are smaller with black letters on white, Missouri spelled out. Co. L. Blanton Jr. bought the first pair in Sikeston. The deadline to purchase and display 1936 plates is February 1.
The Woman's Club arranged gifts for numerous children to be given to their parents for presentation on Christmas morning. President H. E. Reuber and members C. D. Matthews and AL Harrison were involved in coordinating the effort.
In Scott County circuit court Judge Frank O Kelly sentenced Claude McGee of Cape Girardeau to death for murder. Attorneys sought a postponement for a Missouri Supreme Court appeal, likely delaying final sentence by about a year. Co defendant Floyd Smith also awaiting appeal. third defendant John B Manor has not yet had a final hearing.

The Works Progress Administration will lay sidewalks in Sikeston using 200 dollars of Progress Administration funds delayed by slow property owner cooperation. An engineer reports a tank installation at an estimated 1000 dollars. A new school project starts January 15 in Mississippi County. Berney Ferry road from Highway 60 to Wickliffe ferry dock will cost 5579 dollars to improve. Caruthersville sewer replacements cost 2698 dollars, and New Madrid street water mains work is funded. State Highway Department paving receives 2500 dollars.
World traveler and author Richard Halliburton will lecture on Seven League Boots at Sikeston High School auditorium Tuesday night January 7 at 8 o'clock. Brought by Sikeston Public Schools and the Junior Chamber of Commerce, tickets are available at H. & L. Drug Store. Crowds from across the district are expected.
Mrs. Mamie Johnson of Landers Ridge and four of her children attended the golden wedding of her parents Mr. and Mrs. T. J. Estill in Middle Town Illinois last week. They also visited relatives in Bloomington Illinois before returning home last Saturday.
Postmaster C F Bruton said December volume at the local post office rose by a between percent over December 1934, with exact figures not yet available. The report notes increased business in the holiday period and reflects overall growth compared with 1931 benchmarks.
In Sikeston the 1935 annual report of City Collector Elmos E shows a several hundred dollar increase in total collections over 1934. The report lists categories such as taxes, sewer permits, building permits, miscellaneous items, and cutting fees, with a twelve month total and a breakdown of the year's rise.
The Works Progress Administration adult education program will begin early next week in Southeast Missouri under Ninth District director L. Blanton Jr. The plan lists the number of teachers and funding per county, with Cape Girardeau, Stoddard, and St Francois counties receiving multiple instructors and funds. Two nursery schools will operate in Cape Girardeau, one in Mississippi, and two in St Francois. County superintendents will handle applicant inquiries and district supervision will be by the Ninth District.
Herbert Fox of Charleston has leased the room in the Beck building on Front street formerly occupied by Wolf House Furnishing Company and will open a large grocery store by February 1. Fox already runs a Charleston grocery and a dry goods and clothing shop with a large patronage. He previously lived in Morehouse where his father runs a large store. Wolf Company’s lease in the Beek building expired yesterday. they will likely keep part of the Odd Fellows building for a time.
Dr. Lan Owen Rodes, age 70, longtime Sikeston Methodist pastor, died after a long illness. Funeral services were conducted with special quartet music and pallbearers named, noting his retirement due to failing health six years ago and a leg amputation last spring. He maintained an office in the McGoy Tanner building and was a member of the Presbyterian church.
Charles Diemund a 72 year old Dutchtown resident died in a Cape Girardeau hospital after being struck by a southbound Missouri Pacific train near Jackson and Allenville while walking along a railroad path. He is survived by two sisters and two brothers. Funeral services were held Wednesday near Gordonville.
The season's first meaningful snow fell December 26 adding over an inch, with about three more inches by Saturday night. Roads were open but slick, temperatures plunged to 3 degrees above zero Monday night, and highs reached 40 degrees during the week. Rain or snow is forecast with mild temperature swings in coming days.
