The Sikeston Herald reflects on 1958 as a standout year after a disastrous previous cycle for Southeast Missouri agriculture. Mrs Verna Vaacalia Stout 44 of 839 Tanner street was killed instantly when her car rolled over on Highway 61 north of Ste Genevieve in thick fog. Her husband George F Stout died in a similar accident two years earlier. Surviving are her two children Beverly Sue 17 and Roger 13 her parents twin sister and two brothers. Funeral services set for Tuesday at First Baptist Church with burial in Garden of Memories. Eastern Star rites scheduled today at Welsh Funeral Chapel.
Mrs. Jewell Aen reports 122 Christmas baskets were packed and distributed to needy families this year. She credits First Baptist Church Christian Church Assembly of God Tanner Street Church of God Nazarene and Methodist churches for help. Also thanked Dorcas Sunday School class Rotary Lions VEW Goodwill volunteers firemen and Ida Bakers home economics class for dolls washing and dressing.
Newly elected officers of Sikeston Lodge No. 310 A F and A M were installed at the Masonic Temple on Monday night. The program featured Installing Master A A Harrison, Marshal Walter M Earburn, and Chaplain Rev J C Montgomery Jr. The lodge marks its 50th year since 1869.
C BE Daddy Felker, county collector, announces Sikeston branch has collected 254107.11 this month, bringing total county taxes to 1 233450.43. The Sikeston office will remain open until 5 pm Wednesday then close New Year’s Day, reopening Friday and Saturday noon to aid taxpayers before penalties after Saturday noon. Felker will leave office next March after 20 years.
Fred Moser, Worshipful Master, named the appointive officers to be installed January 2 with open installation. Supper at 6:30 precedes the ceremony. Sikeston merchants termed the 1958 Christmas season among the best in years as a stronger harvest lifted overall trade. Revenues rose for some firms by about 2 percent while others saw modest gains, though a few still dipped from the prior year. Traffic was heavier but purchases favored smaller items, with many visitors viewing decorations but spending little. A rebound in farming after a poor harvest the prior year helped boost urban business despite lingering 1957 losses.
Five people die in a head on crash on Highway 61 near Sikeston while two groups from Caruthersville and St. Louis headed to relatives for Christmas. The dead include Adine Watson and Kathleen Gross from Caruthersville and Henry Jones Louis McNeal Jacqueline Wise from St Louis. Multiple others are hospitalized in critical or serious condition. Rev Panui D Higgins, after twelve years in the area as superintendent of Missions and two years as associate pastor of First Baptist Church, resigns effective January 15 1959 to become missions superintendent for Capitol City and Sanga mon Valley Baptist Associations in Illinois. He chaired Sketon housing authority and led local civic groups, with his family undecided on Springzela or Decatur Illinois as a new home before starting January 16 1959 duties.

C W H Keller Sr and son W H Keller Jr announce sale of the Keller Family Laundry to Sikeston Laundry. Keller will keep the dry cleaning business at Reber Sloeton on Moore avenue and join Bachelor Bundies. New owners assign a trained driver for two weeks to ease transition and contact Keller patrons for prompt takeover. Last week was the final week Sikeston Laundry accepted family bundles.
James Rogers home at 31 Virginia suffered silent damage when a closet fire started by two daughters using a cigarette lighter while seeking something and dropping the lighter onto clothing. The Wilmes Beauty Shop, also in the building, is affected.
A man described as a convicted rapist and suspect in a murder allegedly confessed, claiming responsibility for the John Malugen case. He was held on earlier bad check charges in Skeston with at least four checks cited. details on amounts and totals were not disclosed. Authorities in Mississippi County report related charges and ongoing investigations.
Four people were injured in a Christmas morning crash at Malone and Kingshighway when two cars failed to stop at a red light. The Morris party from St. Louis included Joanna Morris 24 Emanuel Morris 2 Linda Fortenberg 25 and passenger Larry Hathcoat 4. Benard Ratlon Hatacoat 31 of Anderson Indiana and Lendon Morris 25 of St. Louis also involved were treated at Missouri Delta Community Hospital and released. A second, noninjury crash occurred at Malone and New Madrid when Paul Evans Canalou struck a parked car driven by Jim Green of Oran. Police noted no further injuries.
