Death Toll Mounts in Southeast Missouri Wreck Local memorial services held for five victims
A Missouri crash near Conran and further collision near Sikeston killed five people and injured several others. Javery Higgs, 36, of Malden, died at the scene. The Higgs and Hoggard families, plus Genevive Patton and Vicks Rae, are among the deceased and injured. The accident occurred on Medway 61 and involved multiple vehicles including a GMC truck driven by Javery Higgs.

Retired Judge Joseph H Allen died at age 68 after several months illness. Born March 24, 1898 in St Joseph Missouri, he studied at the University of Missouri and Michigan Law School, served in World War I and II, practiced law in St Joseph then New Madrid, was elected to the 38th Judicial Circuit in 1952, resigned for health, and held memberships in several fraternal and veterans organizations. Birds extinct in historic times in parts of North America and Australia.

School Groups Approve Tax At 3 45 Rate
Citizens Advisory Council for Schools and the Sikeston School Board met Tuesday and unanimously approved keeping the school tax at 3.45 for next year while proposing a separate special building fund. The fund would begin to address pressing needs and a modern high school plant within four to five years. The board aims to lower operating costs to 2 70 while keeping the building fund to raise the total to 3 45. Last year the rate was 3 89 but the state reassessment lowered it to 3 45. The advisory group insists the fund shift is not a new high school plan, though a site south of Beltway 60 and off Ingram Street has been eyed for potential construction. Enrollment at the high school is about 640 and may rise to 700 next year. The district could amass about 700 000 from existing bonds and future funds to begin work on a high school in two to four years, with total cost around 1 2 million. The plan awaits formal board approval and will be put to voters at the April 3 election. The Citizen Advisory Council for School was reorganized for 1998 with Lee Bowman Sr. as chairman and George Hale Jr. as vice chairman among others.
