Sikeston Board approves cost of living rise for teachers
The Sikeston School Board unanimously approved a $200 cost of living adjustment for teachers and varying amounts for other school staff. The move adds to the current salary schedule as a year only measure to offset inflation, while not altering the base pay scale. The board also authorized bids to purchase a new school bus to replace the oldest, keeping existing buses as spares and for activity use. Recent system upgrades include science equipment, cafeteria gas conversion, water heating changes, shrubbery, and expanded elementary reading. Enrollment is listed at 2,733, with 1,837 white elementary, 363 colored elementary, 495 white high school, and 38 colored high school students. Board president R. A. McCord, other members, secretary Roger Bailey, and superintendent Lynn Twitty attended.

State Patrolman Edwin Wright identifies Sam Pitts, 30, of Charleston, as the man who snapped a pistol in his face at the South Y a week ago. Simms Pitts, 29, of Charleston, was fatally shot by Policeman Ellis Sadler in the Negro section last Friday night. the wounded man died later at Cairo hospital after being taken from the scene where Pitts had seriously wounded Robert Kirkwood. The gun reportedly failed to fire as Pitts tried to shoot the officer.

$800,000 REA loan signed this week for co op
Senator Thomas C. Henning Jr reports that the Rural Electrification Administration approved an $800,000 loan for the Scott Mississippi New Madrid Electric Co-operative. The funds will build 256 miles of line and upgrades to serve 943 rural homes across Cape Girardeau Stoddard Mississippi Scott and New Madrid counties. The project includes a nine mile line from a new substation at Idalia to Bloomfield and feeder lines to the M. & A. plant west of Poplar Bluff, with Irby Construction to build about 142 miles of the work and the remainder contracted next fall.
