Change Wanted In Subsidy Law
Mississippi county farmers meeting in Charleston voiced protest against unequal federal payments that go to landowners who do not labor on crops. They urge a 1940 crop subsidy reform so landlords or tenants must perform bodily work to receive government payments, citing displacement of sharecroppers by new owners and hired labor. The group seeks action by Congress and the Agriculture Secretary to restore labor provisions under the cotton program.
