John L. Lewis agreed to a three day a week work schedule for his coal miners starting next Monday to keep the nation nervous. In Sikeston coal is moved car to bin with about 800 tons available for quick delivery. Dealers warn orders remain unfilled and note past price hikes during the last strike.
Mrs Juanita Woods Allen aged 63 died Wednesday morning at 1009 North Ranney after long illness. Funeral at Methodist church Friday 2 pm with City cemetery burial. Born Sugar City Colorado October 17 1901 she studied music at Stephen College in Columbia and taught in Sikeston. Survived by husband Thomas B Allen daughter Mimi Smitten and mother Mrs P S Woods plus three brothers and two sisters.
Postmaster Malcolm announces Yuletide mailing season, forecasting a flood of Christmas mail far exceeding 1948. He urges early stamp purchases, accurate addresses, and first class mailing for cards and gifts, with dates for distant state mail by December 5 and local by December 15.
Scott county cotton growers will join national voters on December 15 to decide a plan restricting cotton acreage to secure a government price guarantee for next year. The measure, approved by Congress, would cut Scott county acreage from about 22 100 to 18 325 acres if approved, with local polling sites and election managers listed in each township. Additional county results and New Madrid county voting sites were to be announced next week. Mr. and Mrs. Ponder and children returned from Marshall Iowa after visiting relatives.
Santa Claus arrives at Legion Park in Sikeston at 2 30 p.m. Wednesday December 7 to hand out gifts to every child and announce prizes in a village wide Merchants Party. The Sikeston high school band and a puppet show will entertain as about 2000 gifts including skates dolls and cash are distributed.
Partly cloudy and cooler forecast with a summary of recent temperatures. The week highs ranged from 53 to 77 degrees with nightly lows from 24 to 42, and this morning’s temperature was 32 degrees.
Southeast Missouri Association of School Administrators heard State Education Commissioner Hubert Wheeler in Sikeston on the causes of Missouri's teacher shortage. He cited low salaries, reduced property valuations cutting school funding, limited bonding due to valuation, and generally weak teacher training. Wheeler urged a $15 million increase for average teacher wages and noted many teachers lack bachelor degrees.
The Sixty-fifth General Assembly adjourned last night after approving two appropriation bills totaling 600 million dollars. The postwar reserve adds 5 million for public schools, boosting general school funding to about 75 million for the biennium. Also approved were 15.57 million for reserve funds and 3.449 million for miscellaneous claims and expenses. Mr and Mrs G B Greer spent the weekend in St Louis on business and were guests of Mr and Mrs Bill Huff.
Southeast Missouri logged six traffic deaths since early Sunday, with three in a Van Buren crash when a 1940 Chevrolet flatbed overturned and burned. Victims were Ellington timber workers Jerry Moore 15 William Woolf 18 and Sammy Freeman. Woolf died after rescue and hospital treatment from first degree burns. Two other fatalities occurred near Ristine in New Madrid county when a railroad motor car hit a tractor trailer, killing Chester Pace 43 of Camden Arkansas and Adolph Wyrick 23 of Stephens Arkansas. Eighteen others were injured and treated. A Bertrand motorist Henry Howell VanPool 27 died from a skull fracture after a crash near Wyatt.
Three Sikeston gins report 9574 bales of cotton ginned this season and local ginners estimate about 92 percent of the territory’s cotton crop has already been ginned.
