Last Rites for Kelly Humes in Sikeston Tragedy
Funeral services for Kelly David Humes 25 of Sikeston were held at the Methodist church with Rev John L Tavilor officiating and interment at Memoral Park cemetery in a Welsh service. Humes died after a freak crash on Highway 60 east of Wyatt. He suffered fatal burns attempting to guide a Model T Ford belonging to his foster father Jim Winchester when the car plummeted down a levee slope and burst into flames. Witnesses said Humes was on the running board as the car left the road and struck a stump, then fire spread as he was thrown across the seat. He was taken to St Marvus Hospital in Cairo where he died at 9:17 p.m. The crash near Brewer’s Lake and the Cairo bridge followed prior odd happenings involving the car and its occupants. He is survived by his wife Lucille and daughter Mary Lucille, plus his mother and foster father, a sister, a grandmother, a grandfather, and several uncles and aunts.

The Southeast Missouri Jubilee committee met at the Scott County Milling Co. building to discuss plans for the 1939 celebration. Officers and members reviewed band selection for the Queer's Ball, float sponsorship by the Lions Club, entertainment plans, and a new agriculture exhibit. A 2500 dollar budget was set with 1500 to be raised by Kiwanis through solicitation and 1000 via concessions and dance receipts. Watermelon Truck Crash on Sunday Destroys Produce
Roy Chatfield of Palmyra Missouri lost control of his water tank truck on North Ramsey Street Sunday afternoon. He skidded several feet attempting to stop before crashing into a tree. A bag of watermelons was destroyed and the truck sustained $300 in damage. Chatfield was unhurt, and authorities suspect drowsiness.

Watermelons dropped to the low level this week due to overstocked markets and cooler rainy weather. Wesco Foods Co. mainly buys at Sikeston with 210 carloads so far this season, closing offices at Charleston, Bertrand and Matthews but continuing at Sikeston and McMullin. Prices ranged from 10 to 4 cents, similar to yesterday, last year’s range was 16 to 9 cents, and buyers expect a market upturn before season end as fruit quality improves and bottom prices appear near.

Guard Leaves for Camp Saturday
Officers of Company KK 10th Infantry Missouri National Guard and 55 enlisted men will leave here Saturday at 1 28 p.m. for a two week summer bivouac at Camp Clark near Nevada. Captain Fufus Reed will accompany the unit over a new route arriving in Memphis after a layover, then continue to Lamar and on to Camp Clark with Chaffee and Marston units. The group will spend three days on rifle instruction, focusing on non commissioned officers and enlisted men. Additional detachments from Cape Girardeau and Hayti will assist in camp setup and supply, with officers and enlisted men listed among those traveling.

East Prairie Youth Killed in Accident
Leroy Burchett, 15, son of Mr and Mrs Tom Burchett of East Prairie, died after a car overturn on Highway 55 near Diehlstadt. He and six other boys were returning from a roller skating rink near Cape Girardeau when the crash occurred. He died shortly after at a Cairo hospital.

Plans for Sikeston Boy Scout drive delayed meeting set
Plans for the Boy Scout drive originally due in May will be finalized at a Sikeston Boy Scout Council meeting in the office of George W. Kirk at D o'clock tomorrow afternoon. The council lags behind Southeast Missouri Area Council quota as Sikeston Scouts and leaders show renewed interest. Over the past two months two boys advanced from Tenderfoot to Second Class, five to First Class, and nine earned merit badges.

Electric Lines To Be Extended In Stoddard County
Construction for a 200 mile extension by Scott New Madrid Mississippi Cooperative Association aims to begin by August 15 after securing most easements. The line will serve about 7,000 customers in Stoddard County with a few spurs in three counties, and be completed within 45 to 50 days if weather stays fair.

Sikeston wreck injures five riding together
Five Sikeston youths and five other occupants suffered cuts and bruises when the car driven by James Sonny Hazel overturned after a collision at Moore and Tanner streets Sunday night. The Hazel car, westbound on Tanner, was struck on the left rear fender by Jim Robey of McMullin traveling north on Moore. Robey, his wife, Woodrow Beavers and three children escaped with minor injuries. both cars were badly damaged.

Tragic Chaffee Crash Kills Three Men Near Sikeston
A head on collision north of Sikeston killed Matthews Osborn and William Williams, both of Chaffee, and severely injured Patrolman Wormer and truck driver Earl Lyles. Osborn died at Southeast Missouri Hospital. Williams died at the scene. The truck was driven by Lyles of Rector Arkansas. investigation by Patrolman Boisaubin noted no stop before impact.
