The World This Week reports 96 recipients receive fellowships totaling 230000, with 41 in military service or war work. Fellowships for service members will be held for use after discharge, per foundation statements.
Health Week spotlighted in Sikeston during the first week in May with emphasis on child health. Supt Tharon Stallings urges smallpox vaccination for all pupils and complete annual physicals for students and families. Birth registration is highlighted as May Day Birth Registration Day. A full-time school nurse will assist May 7–11 at Bailey and South Grade schools. Joseph Briggs, Civil War veteran, seriously ill in St Louis at 96.
Oliver L. Parks of Parks Air College will join Sikeston civic leaders and Eugene V. Fryhoff at the Dunn Hotel tomorrow to discuss the city’s airport needs and prospects. Parks, a longtime aviation pioneer, has trained Army pilots at his Missouri Institute of Aeronautics, a familiar Sikeston sight for four years.
Pfc. John Rodes Roth, 20, son of Lieut. Col. and Mrs. Arnold Roth of Cape Girardeau, formerly Sikeston residents, was killed in Germany on March 21 after being reported missing on that date. He had gone overseas September 1, 1944 and earned the Purple Heart and Combat Infantryman Badge. Col. Roth recently received word of his son's death after contact through Army channels.
President Truman urged nations to live together in peace at the opening of the United Nations Conference on International Organization in San Francisco. Delegates from 46 nations gathered as outlines of the Dumbarton Oaks plan were presented, proposing a General Assembly and a Security Council with veto power to prevent future wars.
Robert Williams 48 and his wife Edna 38 of Chaffee along with Williams sisters Laura Rile 40 and Virginia Williams 36 of New York City admitted possession selling and transporting marijuana used to make reefers. U S Attorney says they were key players in a large narcotics operation, with 50 pounds found in transit and potential penalties up to five years and $2000 fines each.
Mr and Mrs A B Comer received a message from the War Department this morning stating their son 5 Sgt Guy B Comer is missing in action in Germany since April 8 Sgt Comer 29 former resident of Cape Girardeau was inducted in the Army at Jackson more than three years ago and had been overseas since last February. The last letter was dated March 26 His brother T Set L A Comer serves with Air Transport Command in Wilmington Del He has two other brothers L D Comer of Chicago and Henry Comer who was called to San Francisco for the illness of a daughter He also has two sisters Mrs Harry McFarling of Morehouse and Mrs Cleve Duke of San Francisco.
Mr and Mrs J H Crosno received word that M A Bell Jr the son of Mr and Mrs M A Bell has been missing in action in Germany since April He had been a farmer family moved to McAllen Texas with large land interests He attended Matthews High School and played on the softball team for several seasons
Hershel Hayden, son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Hayden of near Bertrand, was killed in action in the Southwest Pacific on March 27, per a telegram to his parents. Inducted in 1942, he trained in California and at Camp Livingston, Louisiana. Survived by parents, four sisters and five brothers including Lloyd in Virginia, Pershing in Germany, Ira in Lafayette, and Robert Hayden Jr. at home.
Allied forces led by the American Third Army press toward the German Austrian border amid rapid clashes and expected push toward Munich and Berchtesgaden. The Seventh and First Armies close in on Munich while Russians encircle Berlin, trapping nearly 500,000 Nazis. In the Pacific, Okinawa nears final thrust as American troops kill about 19 Japanese per prisoner and target Japanese airports near the home islands.
Standard Oil dealers and company representatives will hold the annual dealer banquet at the Dunn Hotel in Sikeston on Tuesday night May 1 at 7 15. About 75 dealers and guests are expected to attend the Sikeston territory conference, according to Ralph G Maddox of Oran.
