A Southeast Missouri reader laments higher taxes and underassessed property across Scott County and surrounding areas. He attacks the State Tax Commission for planned 30 percent assessments and future bills, warning residents they cannot laugh off rising levies and must face greater tax burdens next year.
A controversial opinion from Attorney General Dalton says appraisers cannot be hired to check real estate valuations and urges equalized assessments as the only solution to tax injustices. The notice predicts a 30 percent actual-value assessment in Madison County within a year or two, warns against blanket assessments, and calls for readiness for upcoming changes.
The Tanner Steel Church of God Builders' Class in Sikeston reports success from two projects the Bible sign atop the Lewis Sales Company building and the Bible Book Store. Since 1953 the sign has drawn readers, influencing lives, while the store opened in 1954 and is near self‑supporting under Charles Green.
Carol Jovi and Bo.k.a McCaa, juniors at Skesten Haugh School, were chosen this morning to represent the Misouri high schools at the 1995 UNESCO trip. The group departs St Louis at 1 am Monday, travels by train to Washington, visits Arlington Cemetery and the White House, tours government buildings, then proceeds to New York to tour Radio City and the United Nations building. In New York they will be addressed by Dr Ralph Burchell and Dr George N Schuster.
Stoddard County will start oiling Route Y from the junction to Salcedo during the week of April 25. Route M oiling is planned for May 2. After blading the surface, half the road will be primed and treated at each operation to allow traffic and reduce loose gravel. A second application will follow on the same sections later in the period.
Horace Dunagan Jr formerly of Dyersburg Tennessee has been named executive vice president at First State Bank in Caruthersville Missouri. The announcement came Tuesday and outlines his new leadership role within the local bank.
Ark-Mo Power reports its new stock issue oversubscribed with 86 868 shares subscribed. About 64 percent of Ark-Mo and Associated employees bought 2385 shares. The issue, intended to fund construction and expansion of electric service to meet growth, offers a payroll deduction plan over 20 months and a 4 1 2 percent dividend return.
Ford Motor Company announces new tricycle tractors in 900 and 700 series with power rear wheels and high clearance. Hale Williams Tractor Co features front mounted implements including cultivators planters fertilizer side dressers and two and four row configurations. The line adds to Ford's eight new tractors since January with rest ride seats closed cabs and a three point hitch hydraulic system plus weight options for rear wheels.
In Greenville Missouri the court issued a temporary injunction restraining four unions and 36 individuals from interfering with highway 67 relocation work in Waste County. The order, issued Monday, aims to curb actions following a beating incident involving non union workers amid ongoing project delays.

Joe Laws Jones, 66, arrived in Sikestsn to live with his son. He died at 12 30 pm at Missouri Delta Community Hospital from self inflicted chest wound with a 38 caliber pistol. He had lived in Tiptonville Tennessee and Memphis, with two sons Virgil and John L Jones. Born May 18 1888 in Franklin Tennessee. Funeral arrangements incomplete.
Charleston longtime resident Bertrand Peters 69 a retired farmer dies at home of a heart ailment survived by four sons Charles Albert Lester and Carl Peters all of Bertrand community four daughters Lafon Relick Leona Swirt es Coe Tyneh and William Brown and others a sister and a great grandchild referenced in obituary noting birth in 1885 in St Louis and marriage lasting about 30 years.

Overweight truck penalties ranged from 12.30 to 198.50 based on excess weight at the Highway Patrol Weight Station near Matthews on Highway 61. Walter Craig faced felonious assault prelims, bound over on 500 bond. James W Smith held on 900 bond for alleged chicken stealing. Samuel Teague and Ralph Wikburn each fined 1250 for careless driving. Donald Broadhacker fined 530 for no operator’s license. Fred Whittenmore 12.50 for improper registration. E Gilpin 8.50 for no trailer license. In Circuit Court Judge Joseph H. Allen presiding, two divorces granted: Leona Harris vs Floyd Harris and Floyd R. Robertson vs Mildred Lene Robertson.
