Kennett Banker Dies at 64 in Kennett
Lee Shelton banker of Kennett and owner of large Dunklin county farmland died last night at his Kennett home from a kidney ailment. Aged 64, he also ran a general merchandise store in Kennett for many years and served as a Colonel on the staff of Governor Frederick D. Gardner.

Heavy frost Tuesday night and recent cold snap mildly damaged Scott county fruit and gardens. Peaches apples and medlar species suffered most though few commercial orchards exist, limiting losses. Entomologist Curtis Wingo of Missouri University noted peach pear and plum trees with blossoms lost about ten percent of crop prospects.

Sikeston Negro Fatally Burned
Thomas Williams, 89, a longtime Sikeston resident known as Uncle Tom, died after a cabin fire partially destroyed his two room home on Gladys street. He was found severely burned and died at noon Wednesday after emergency treatment and transfer to St Francis Hospital. Funeral services were held at Sunset Colored Methodist church with interment in Sunset cemetery.

Vanduser Women Serious Burned in Tent Fire West of Vanduser
Mrs. Cora Chas teen 57 and her daughter Pearl Chasteen 28 were seriously burned when a fire destroyed their tent home a mile west of Vanduser. WPA worker Ray Chasteen 22 escaped with minor injuries as he pulled them to safety. The tent had been oiled to weatherproof it and the heat of the stove is believed to have ignited the canvas. The two women are expected to recover.

WPA garden delays touch five acre plot plan
The Parent-Teacher Association garden, a WPA project, has been delayed by ten days of bad weather. A half acre is planted with potatoes and onions carrots beets spinach mustard and beans on the five acre plot donated by Mrs. Jennie Sikes. Cabbage and tomato slips grow in the hotbed and will be set out later. Two men and six women from the WPA work on the project. A second call for glass fruit jars is issued for contributions to supply lunches for the south grade school building next winter.

Prison sentence for Negro burglar Sylvester Lewis
Sylvester Lewis pleaded guilty to burglary and larceny in Cape Girardeau circuit court.
