Artesia Man Kills Self in Despondent Slump

Artesia New Mexico October 5 1900 about six oclock yesterday morning J F Atkinson used a double barreled gun to shoot himself in the mouth killing himself instantly. He was despondent over financial affairs and leaves a family or heirs.

The act shocked acquaintances who say he had always conducted himself well. He owned a beautiful home in Artesia and a farm nearby. An inquest is held today and burial location has not yet been decided.

Otero Sentenced to Fifteen Years in Penitentiary

Judge Mechem discharged the petit jury after sentencing defendants over the past ten days. Lorenzo Otero received a sentence of not less than fifteen nor more than twenty years for rape. Jesus Ma Baca was jailed one year for larceny from a person. Rafael Rivera received six months in county jail after pleading guilty to larceny. Tomas Requivel faced a thousand dollar fine and costs for carrying and discharging a deadly weapon, suspended on payment. Martin Grijalva pled guilty to assault with a deadly weapon and paid fifty dollars, costs suspended on good behavior.

Woman Killed by Lightning in New Mexico Town

Las Vegas New Mexico October 5 A severe thunderstorm last night killed Mrs Antonio Garcia as lightning struck her home in Las Manuelita Northwest county. Other family members were badly wounded but escaped serious injury. The death was reported by a local resident who bought a coffin for her burial tomorrow. Mrs Garcia was middle aged and survived by a husband and several children.
