Dual murder in Deadwood era fuels local frontier legends
In spring 1876 near Crook City Dakota two partners Tom Moore and Com Shaffer sparred over a sale of stolen horses. A gunfight left Moore dead and Shaffer wounded, with town memory praising Shaffer’s courage. Later that year Cheyenne conflicts killed many around the Black Hills as law and order struggled. Tombstone era mining life shows similar ruthlessness with two prospectors nearly blowing themselves up in a blacksmith shop shaft, a tale of reckless gamble and harsh frontier risk.

Market for Talismans and Belief in Magic Powers
A long description notes New York and other cities sell thousands of talismans yearly. Makers number in the hundreds, with prices often five to ten dollars for inscribed leather or metal discs. Belief spans ages and regions, linked to planetary configurations and birth dates for luck, health, wealth, and love. Talismans are worn around the neck or as rings and must stay with the wearer. The piece also mentions a fragile link between faith, power of symbols, and historic claims of success, including an Egyptian priest’s talisman tied to a famous figure. Separate item: polar property sale in Siberia by Lerner expedition, Berlin syndicate.
