Joseph Choate recalled a 1860s case where a workman claimed left eye loss from an explosion. The judge used color-changing lenses and a blackboard test. The man read the sentence with his left eye, leading to dismissal for imposture.
A Civil War era note recalls President elect James Buchanan near Lancaster Pennsylvania where Abraham Cassel, head of a local turnpike, granted toll concessions to visitors during his campaign. After victory, Buchanan begged Cassel to keep crowds away by raising tolls to deter supporters.
