Hillsboro Board Lowers Ranch Assessments in July Session
Hillsboro New Mexico commissioners, meeting as Board of Equalization, trimmed several property assessments. The Victoria Land & Cattle Co saw land value reduced from 5 per acre to 30 cents, and Eagle Cattle Co’s stock and improvements were cut to 400 cattle and 500 dollars respectively. Manuel Padilla’s sheep assessment was set aside and canceled. other adjustments followed. The court budget and tax levy were approved, with warrants paid from multiple funds.

Japan Paper Plant Industry Expands to U S and Europe
The Mitsumata shrub, a valuable paper plant from Japan, is being tested for cultivation in the United States and southern Europe. The U S Department of Agriculture sent experts to obtain seeds and assess growing in Florida, Louisiana, irrigated Texas, the Colorado desert, and parts of California. Yields in Japan reach about 2000 pounds of raw bark per acre with crude pulp sold at 16 cents per pound. Seed prices reach about $1 60 per gallon and as many as 24000 shrubs can be grown per acre.
