The Bridal Chamber Mine and Lake Valley Boom
The 1878 discovery near Lake Valley led to a booming town and a rush to mine the Bridal Chamber ore. Rich horn silver yielded large shipments, thefts and violence followed, and the town’s fortunes waned as the mine declined and equipment rusted away. Authorities cracked down on bullion theft, but the era left legends of the Bridal Chamber and a ghost town.

Santo Frigate Reaches Delaware Breakwater After Collision
The old US frigate Santo, famed for service in 1812 Mexican and Civil Wars, arrived at the Delaware breakwater with six feet of water in her hold after a collision near Annapolis. Sold to a Philadelphia firm for breaking up, she was reported to contain copper and about fifteen percent gold.
