Panama Canal Toll Road Led To Great American Rail Route
The Panama railway began with American and Irish laborers on Mansanillo Island in 1848 and 1850 concessions by New Granada. The line, vital to canal construction, faced disease, labor losses, and high foreign-sourced materials. It crossed the isthmus in 1865, cost about 8 million dollars to date, and later became U S owned. The Gatun dam created a large lake altering the route with embankments and elevated grades.
