Morgan and Panama City Destroyed by Buccaneers 1671
Captain Morgan led a thousand buccaneers from the Dike to Panama in 1671, storming Fort San Lorenzo and the city. After a brutal siege the Spaniards retreated or died, and Morgan carried off treasure and prisoners before burning the city to ruin. The tale, told by Esquemeling and referenced by Howard Pyle, chronicles hunger, courage, and relentless assault. The ruined Panama remains, with Fort San Lorenzo and ruins viewable near Gatun.
