Two promising youths from the Nor Side tract turned from the straight path and met misfortune. Authorities report the pair strayed into risky behavior, resulting in harm and concern for the community.
Two Kansas youths Fred Brown and L R Hasting suspected of burglaries used deserted cabins near Wendell as hideouts moving west after early morning pursuit. A posse including Deputy Sheriff Robert T. Blair surrounded them, misidentified the Gridley camp, and in the exchange a Kansas man shot himself. The surviving suspect was taken to Wendell then Shoshone to face Judge Walters.
The Rexbury Standard lauds Governor Brady and his anti liquor effort, urging election renewal as Idaho attracts middle western families seeking homes and good moral surroundings. The paper argues these new residents, and their friends, will seek stability here under Idaho’s option law.
Fragmentary remarks question the fate of the Governor in the re election battle and ponder how defeating him on the temperance issue would affect state welfare. The speaker notes temperance supporters divided in the contest and leaves the consequences to readers.
Payette high school defeated Shoshone 4 to 1 after noon Monday in a top quality game. Payette pitcher Ben Culver struck out eight while Shoshone’s Charles Keefer fanned nine. Errors by Shoshone cost them the game as Payette claimed the win and prepared to defend southwestern Idaho honors. Shoshone girls sold ice cream and drinks at the event to raise funds for the Payette team.
Presidents Day afternoon at the Shoshone Study Club featured two guessing games and a prize for the second game. Mrs. Babcock won the cup and saucer. The club, with 26 members, plans study on Spain Holland Norway and Sweden and eyes a big district federation meeting in October. Officers listed include President Mrs G H Wheeler Horn, Treasurer Mrs John Hunter, and Press Reporter Alta E Gooding.
The Journal predicts prosperity as the Great Shoshone and Twin Falls Power Company will harness Upper Salmon Falls to supply electricity for Wood River and Shoshone districts. Willight & Conway Construction moves a 25 horse team to begin lower canal work. Farmers anticipate a record fruit crop in 1910 with ample sunshine and reliable rain.
News from Dietrich reports W L Doe and family arriving from Bowhells North Dakota to prove up an eight acre ranch. Local booster activity rises with E E Jamison noting rapid settler influx while hotel manager Daugherty says brisk business. A Kirshner buys a Dietrich business lot to stock a confectionery. Herman Enderson plans to prove up June 6 and considers Saddlery venture here.
Members met in the Hotel Dietrich office last Saturday with gratifying results. President W. E. Albers called the meeting to order at 3 PM and several new members enrolled. An adjournment set for Saturday June 11 at 2 30 PM to swell attendance and conduct important business. The hotel management earned thanks for hosting.
The Spokesman Review lauds the National Apple Show in Spokane as a thriving Northwest institution. From November 11 to 19 the event offers over 20 000 in prizes and features prize winning apples displayed in Chicago, highlighting regional apple industry growth and community support.
Professor W L Carlyle and F J Ferrell visited Boise to outline a broad plan by the University of Idaho and state stations. Regents aim to place three experts in southern Idaho for seasonal work with farmers, fruit growers and chairmen, including a horticulturist and entomologist, a dairyman, and an irrigationist. The agricultural course will emphasize practical instruction, with a June excursion to the Gooding station planned to reveal best farming methods for farmers statewide.
The Heavy Holder of Lincoln Land RLM Kipp recently bought the Hunter rents of acres seven miles west of town for a constant fee paid to C. J. Lisle at Rich Belt. The Kipp family now owns over 1700 acres across three Lincoln County ranches, the first being Burns lane near the Cottonwoosts on the Big Wood river. The property is expected to gain value in the near future.
Friday, June seventeenth, Twin Falls and Lincoln Counties announce a joint flag raising celebration at Shoshone Falls. Prominent speakers including Lieut Governor Sweetzer are expected to attend. The event aims to inspire better access to the falls and foster public interest, with local committees from both counties organizing the program.
