Extra Five Mills Favored By City Levee Meeting
A mass meeting of city officials unanimously voted for adding five mills to this year’s levy. The meeting chaired by EA Bowler and with Mrs. Leah M. Burnside as secretary reviewed finances showing street sprinkling, lighting, street and bridge work, rent for library rest room, drayage, materials, police, insurance, and miscellaneous costs totaling 9674.29 dollars. With valuations falling from 542,055 to 510,024 this year, a 15 mill levy would raise 7,650 dollars, about 3,024 dollars less than last year, prompting plans to reduce the total levy from 20 to 18.5 mills and set next year’s levy on the current year’s lower valuation.
