Title to the Panama Canal

The Cabinet at its July 1 meeting referred the matter of securing a satisfactory affirmation of title to the New Panama Canal Company property to the Attorney General. It is likely he will seek French cooperation via the Chamber of Deputies to solidify the canal’s legality for the United States. Informal assurances from France are expected, and records from French courts may be accessed for further evidence. Continued friendly ties should resolve the issue soon, with treaty talks with Colombia hoped to begin next year. The President and Cabinet are praised for prompt action under the law.
