Soldier and the apple tree tale from A Soldier's Letters
A Civil War anecdote recounts General Jackson scolding a Texan foraging as the army marched toward Staunton. The Texan repeatedly answers I don’t know to every question, explaining he followed orders to keep silent and that Jackson’s strict foraging ban caused him to fill his haversack with apples. General Hood and General Jackson both appear in the clash of literal obedience and practical hunger.
