The legislature enacted a new game law now in effect. It prohibits killing certain game birds without seasons, limits daily bag counts, and forbids destroying nests. Licenses for hunting and fishing must be shown to wardens or deputies, with fees set for residents and nonresidents.
The Railroad Hotel, under the management of J M Puller, opened for business last week. The building has been in operation recently and now serves patrons with its new management.
The carpenters painters and paper hangers finished in two months and the building now in excellent shape after remodeling. New furniture and carpets in every room make it one of the best hotels in the city. Mr Fuller furnished twenty six sleeping rooms and the Fullers, experienced in hotel business at Bliss, are expected to run a successful venture.
H M Helgen of Emmetsburg Iowa visited Idaho this week to assess land as part of a colony of about thirty leading families. He traveled to Shoshone and Twin Falls to inspect the area for canal development and reported the country surpassed expectations, promising a favorable report.
The new Albion State Normal school board, appointed by Governor Morrison, met at the McFall house to discuss improvements funded by a $12,000 legislature appropriation. Horace Ellis remains head of faculty and will select his staff as attendance rises from about sixty to 130–140 students.
Last Sunday afternoon Mrs. Alex McKay with her brother and others attempted to drive a buggy across county toward her parents home near Gooding. The party was en route when the accident occurred, leaving Mrs. McKay injured and the Journal records the tragic event.
The passenger was coming and the team frightened. The two young men in the buggy jumped out and grabbed the horses until the train passed. Mrs McKay, frightened, jumped from the buggy, broke an ankle, and was brought home Monday by her husband. She is under a doctor's care and improving as expected.
A car load of cross arms for the Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone Company was unloaded early this week for a new line from Shoshone to the Blue Lakes. Poles are due daily and crews will begin work as they arrive. The company plans to extend the line to Malad City in summer to serve distant towns and assist merchants near the Twin Falls canal project.
Notes report W Custer starting excavation Monday for a new meat market. Stone cellars will support brick structure. Custer aims to finish and move in within sixty days. Also noted: A H Williams moving his blacksmith shop to a better east side location near stockgrowers warehouse. Fragments mention Burkill buying land between the First National Bank and Taos saloon to build a stone harness shop, and A J McMahon adding a cottage extension and planning a new 16 by 25 foot residence with modern conveniences opposite the Baptist church.
Oliver E. Decker and Miss May Clark of Bliss were wed last Sunday at the home of Mr and Mrs J M Fuller. Rev Barger officiated in a small gathering of relatives and friends. The couple, well known among Shoshone residents, left Monday for Bliss to begin their life together.
W G Filer, general manager of Twin Falls Land and Water Company, reports dam construction started with planned completion by April 1, 1904. The project includes about fifty miles of canal and hundreds of miles of laterals, employing 1200 men and about 800 teams within three months. Settlers inquire about land. attorney Critchlow and Filer will travel to Boise to finalize details as irrigation readiness approaches.
A set of seamen cadets from Annapolis depart to supply officers for the expanded Navy. Apprentices advance quickly to qualify, with only four of twenty seven applicants chosen as the cream of young Americans. Friends offer best wishes and predict he will earn an officer's commission with pride.
Obituary notes Minnie Woodworth Donaldson died at home in this city on March 3 1903 aged 17 years 11 months and 3 days. The community mourns her loss in a quiet and modest manner. Funeral services were held April 1 at 10 am at the Methodist church with a photograph of the body taken before interment to be a lifelong remembrance for her family.
R M McCollum returns from Boise with his nephew Samuel Champlain to win him a berth in U S Naval training schools at Yerba Buena Island. Sam, initially disqualified for moderate tonsillar enlargement, is waived after strong support from Lt Miller Doctor Duncan and Boise officials. He will depart for San Francisco Saturday night as an apprentice, earning gradually increasing monthly pay and advancing toward petty officer during a four year course.
In compliance with the law I have designated Friday April 24 1903 as Arbor Day for Lincoln County. The proclamation sets aside the day for tree planting and forestry improvement within the county, urging citizens and schools to participate and promote conservation.
A. McGowan representing the M. Schulz plan factory has stayed at the Columbia for several days. He sells direct from the factory and offers prices aimed at prospective organ buyers. Address F.H. McGowan Shoshone Idaho.
The Hon. Texas Angel of Halley has suffered a rupture of a blood vessel in the brain and been gravely ill for about a week. Improvement has been reported and he now shows a slight chance of recovery, though paralysis of the facial nerves remains a concern.
Notice by the Board of Commissioners of Lincoln County Idaho stating intent to open a petition to erect a Court House at their regular meeting in May. Details mention a cost package of 12 dollars and names Darel Moved, AL Bonse, Tous as participants.
