James Whitcomb Riley famed Hoosier poet died Saturday night at his Lockerbie street home from a paralytic stroke. Born October 7, 1849 in Hancock county, he grew up in the county and Greenfield. His poems such as The Ole Swimmin Hole and When the Frost is on the Pumpkin endear him to readers. His remains lay in State at the Capital Monday afternoon as thousands mourned. burial followed in Indianapolis.
