Jimmie Michalec led Shiner to the championship in the Moulton softball tournament held Saturday. The event drew local teams and fans, crowning Shiner as the tournament winner in a showcase of strong pitching and offense.
Show time at the Palace Theater will be 7 30 p m Thursday starting with the Czech picture tonight. Saturday and Sunday times remain the same. Check weekly program for details.
A large Shiner crowd saw the Red uniforms defeat Sublime Oilers 10 3 for first place in the Moulton Lions Club Tournament. Jimmie Michalec struck out 10 in the finale to raise his three game total to 30 as Frank Strong backed him behind the plate. Laddie Darilek Basil Bell and Frankie Migl fueled the win with timely hits and fielding errors by Sublime. The trophy is a gilded player statue with inscription First Place Lions Inv Tourney Moulton 1948. Proceeds from a future All Stars game benefit the squad.

The first quarterly conference of the year for the Methodist Church met in Shiner on Sunday at 4 p m. Attendees from Flatonia included Supt. of Schools E E Plowman and Mrs Plowman and several couples. Delegates elected to the district conference in Lockhart were Mrs A H Kasper E E Gray and Mrs Dean Dewitt. Recent additions to the Shiner Church were Mr and Mrs J M Yater and Mr and Mrs Laddie Vincik and Walter Wm Vincik from Austin.
A large funeral was held for Mrs. Gus Nollkamper 86 at her home and United Dr. Martin Luther Church after a fall and pneumonia. Born in Hanover Germany on March 8 1862 she settled in Fayette County and lived 68 years in Lavaca County. Survived by two daughters four sons nineteen grandchildren thirteen great grandchildren and several siblings. Interment at Shiner City Cemetery.
Public Weigher L M Roeder reports 10 851 bales of new cotton received up to Tuesday night. Same date last year 9 395.
Miss Joyce Heerssen wed Willie Repka at the Hallettsville home of Justice of the Peace O T Shoemake. The ceremony included a color movie record and was attended by both families plus Mr and Mrs Robert Pozzi of Victoria. The couple will live in Hallettsville where the groom works for Jarbet Construction Company.
Mrs C L Williams is eating comfortably in the local hospital after a fall in her bedroom Monday night. X rays showed only bruises and no broken limb. Her sister Mrs Susie Baumgarten of Schulenburg has returned home after aiding at the bedside.
The Blessed Virgin Mary Society will sponsor a Country Store and Bazaar at the new City Hall on Saturday October 9. Members are asked to donate dressed chicken home made bread noodles cakes pies kolaches or handmade items. Sale time to be announced next week.
The Sweet Home Catholic Picnic will be held Sunday, October 3, rain or shine, after a prior postponement. See advertisement in this issue for details.
A Congregational Social is set for Friday at 7:00 p m on the church lawn of United Dr Martin Luther Church. The Ladies Aid will provide refreshments and the Adult Choir will perform vocal selections. The event promises food fellowship and fun and invites members and friends to attend.
The Gazette announces a county wide road bond election for Lavaca County on November 2 seeking a 750000 bond. The notice urges careful reading of the election order and highlights past defeat by 14 votes, arguing road improvements boost property values, farming, drainage, and school bus service. Details on precinct spending and benefits will follow in future issues.
The Shiner Public School P T A sponsors a Fall Festival Friday October 8 with doors open at 6 30 pm. An eight grade program starts at 7 30 pm followed by a food sale of cakes pies and homemade treats. Admission is 10 cents for adults. free for students. High school booths and ongoing sale of hot dogs sandwiches soda and ice cream. Committees listed for door food sale hot dogs soda and ice cream with chairpersons named.
The V F W Post 6209 will sponsor an annual street carnival on Front Street from Wolters Bros Co to Shiner Drug Co on Saturday evening October 16. The event features various concessions and a free street dance with further details to appear in The Gazette.
Lavaca County 4 H Club boys hold their annual Sears Roebuck pig show Saturday morning October 2 at the Hallettsville Auction barn Judging begins about 9 30 Breeding gifts and market hogs shown with 33 pigs exhibited Winners advance to the District show in Victoria with 24 market hogs in classes of three and several pens of three.
Congratulations flow for several families with newborns at Wagner Hospital. Homer Schilling and wife welcomed a girl on Sept 24 weighing eight pounds fourteen ounces. Adolph Masek and wife of Flatonia had a boy on Sept 26 weighing eight pounds fourteen ounces. Ben Neisner and wife of Schulenburg welcomed a girl on Sept 24 weighing eight pounds seven ounces. Lester Schaefer and wife of Hallettsville had a boy on Sept 25 weighing nine pounds ten ounces. R H Morris and wife of Houston announced a son named Paul Richard born Sept 23 at Herman Hospital. Gene Hajek and wife of Edna welcomed a son on Sept 27 at Dr Strieder Hospital Moulton weighing 8 pounds 12 ounces.
The Catholic Youth organization will attend Holy Communion as a group at 6 30 Mass on Sunday October 3. The next meeting is set for October 6 at 8 p m in the Parish Hall with a social planned. All members are urged to attend both events.
