A Tuesday morning accident near the Ice House injured W P A workers Magnus A Botard of Hallettsville and Everett L Long of Yoakum when struck by a freight train as they searched for a peg on the track. Both men suffered no broken bones or dislocations according to the report.
Mrs. J. C. Blohm returned Thursday from Beaumont after visiting Dorothy Jean and attended the Beaumont Women’s Society for Christian Service charter meeting and the T. S. C. W. ex-students banquet. Mr. and Mrs. George Rogge and daughters of Robstown were weekend guests. Mrs. E. G. Wessels of Houston visited her parents. Three to four inches of rain fell Saturday night.
A 10:00 a m Sunday School session led by Mrs J G Palmer of Nixon trained workers in the children's division. Several certificates were awarded. An all day meeting for children's workers is planned in Yoakum next Friday.

The United Dr Martin Luther Church invites all to a fall festival on Sunday starting at one o clock with a Schulenburg Liederkranz performance and lunch for 15 cents. The event follows services and includes a sermon about a remarkable Doctor who perseveres through rejection. Rev. Richard Schuetze delivers the sermon.
Henry C. Nickel, pastor, announces English services on the second Sunday each month at 3 p m and German services on the fourth Sunday at 3 p m Visitors are welcome to attend both services at Emmanuel Lutheran Church.
Washington notes that married men will not be automatically deferred as a class. Local draft boards must decide each case on its merits, with dependency and income factors considered. A WWI style lottery will order calls, using serial numbers and a national drawing to pick numbers for call order.
The Shiner Garden Club met at Mrs. C. B. Welhausen’s home and elected officers led by President Mrs. E. C. Wolters. A Coca Cola Bottling Co. slide program on Flower Arrangements is set for Sept 24 at 7 30 in City Hall. Members volunteer to plant and deliver blooms for the Fall Flower Show on November 16. The next meeting will be Oct 18 at Mrs. H. G. Hollmann’s home.
Vergie Pearl Rice, 18, with the mentality of a young child, confessed to killing 4 year old Francis Castell of Terryville last week. Authorities say lunacy charges will be filed and she will be sent to a state institution. The body was found in Brushy Creek near Yoakum after initial drowning theories.

Miss Aline Wolters of Shiner appeared in the annual All College Night skit at Texas State College for Women to welcome new students and highlight campus activities. As president of the Deutsch er Verein, she played a leading role in the program with a patriotic theme and original lines.
Harvest months when they have a little money is the time for farmers who are struggling under heavy debts to seek relief. A Lavaca county farm debt adjustment meeting will be held Thursday October 3 at 10 a.m. in the Farm Security Administration office Hallettsville City Hall. Debt distressed farmers may discuss relief options with the committee including time extensions and principal adjustments. The committee aims for fair repayment plans allowing farmers to stay on the farm and eventually settle most obligations with creditors. Members are W. H. Porter M. A. Hobbs and J. M. Canon.
Chas Wagner aged 76 a former Shiner resident died at his son s home in Moulton Friday morning after a brief illness Funeral services were held Saturday afternoon by Rev E Jacobs of the Moulton Lutheran Church with interment in Moulton Cemetery He was born in the old country and came to Fayette County as a child Surviving are two daughters Mrs Leona Merrem of Moulton and Mrs W F Miller of San Antonio three sons Lee and Harry Wagner of Moulton and Arthur Wagner of Shiner ten grandchildren and one great grandchild His wife died in 1939 Deepest sympathy is offered to the bereaved
Patients at the local hospital include Oscar Hohmann of Moulton Mrs John Gloor Mrs Alex Kruse Rose Hubner Mrs John Hauser Benedict Berger of Shiner. Dismissed patient is Clifton Knezek of Flatonia.
A third staking crew has been added in Lavaca County as B E A accelerates its power line project. Headquarters are set in Gonzales while labor crews form there. Construction begins soon and aims to complete nearly 300 miles of lines in 110 working days.
Funeral services for Mrs Alois Holocher were held at her home and at Witting Lutheran Church with Rev W Flachmeier presiding and burial in Witting cemetery. She died aged 64 years 10 months 6 days, born in Welcome Texas. Surviving are her husband, son Emil, daughters Mrs Ad Wagner and Mrs Gus Ehlers, five sisters, four brothers, one half sister and one half brother. Large attendance and many floral tributes marked the final rites.
Mrs. A W Otto extends deep gratitude for the flowers cards and other kindnesses shown during her illness expressing heartfelt thanks to all who offered support and encouragement.
The home of Mr and Mrs Jerry Havel welcomed a 7 4 pound son on Sunday September 15. The mother is Miss Agnes Simper by birth. The infant was baptized Saturday by Rev Bily and named James Curtis with sponsors Mr and Mrs Willie Marcak.
Work on a WPA project started Monday September 23 1940 to finish the first phase and pave Highway 200 from Gonzales road to Rector Street 60 feet wide and widen Highway 95 from Avenue C to Avenue H to 40 feet The project totals 66 663 dollars with costs split between the WPA and City of Shiner including labor cement equipment and engineering fees L D House Cuero area engineer and John C Moore superintendent oversee the effort.
Everybody is invited to a Fall Festival at Blucher Park Sunday afternoon hosted by Benefit Lutheran Church. The event welcomes families and neighbors to enjoy activities, fellowship, and community spirit in a relaxed outdoor setting.
Senator L J Sulak of La Grange made a business visit to the city Monday and planned to travel to Chicago on Thursday for a Czech National Alliance meeting. Mrs John Gloor was hospitalized for treatment and is recovering well. Shiner residents learned of the marriage of John Jacob Weis to Estelle Rosenthal on September 22 in Syracuse New York. Weis was the engineer on the WPA street project. Public Weigher L M Roeder reports 2908 bales weighed to date.
Bennie August Patek aged 20, son of Mr and Mrs Jacob Patek, passed away September 28 1939. The family mourns a beloved son with a heartfelt poem noting the silent ache of loss and the hope of reunion in Heaven.

Judge Paul H. Fertsch appointed Theo Golsch W J Jasek and D B Bishop as Jury Commissioners to select jurors for the December and March terms of the County Court. The commissioners met Wednesday to perform their duties.

Lavaca County farmers growing middling cotton 15 to 16 staple length may place their 1940 crop under Government loan at 9.67 cents per pound. Loans run through May 1, 1941, with rates set by the Commodity Credit Corporation. Loans are net-weight, averaging 40 points above quotes, with premiums and discounts by grade and staple length.
