The Annual VFW Street Carnival is scheduled for Saturday September 27 at 6 00 PM on Front Street. A free dance with Rudy Kurtz Orchestra will be one highlight of entertainment along with games and other activities for attendees.
Identification on last week’s aerial photo confirmed the Jerry B. Havel farm four miles north of Shiner. The 70 acre property bought in 1943 from Charlie Kurtz Sr. features terraced fields and soil conservation. Main crops include cotton, corn and sorghums with cattle and poultry. ducks were removed to reduce grasshopper predation near a stocked tank used for fishing.
L. M. Roeder, Public Weigher, reports 10 064 bales of new cotton received up to Tuesday night September 23. The September 25 1951 report totaled 8 520 and the same date in 1950 was 7 359. Two weeks ago 8 153 bales were reported, making a total of 1 911 bales received in two weeks. The season last year was closed out with 9 716 bales of cotton.
Thirty men from Gonzales and Lavaca Counties underwent pre induction physical exams in San Antonio on Monday September 22. The United States Civil Service Commission announces an open competitive examination to fill the postmaster vacancy in Shiner Texas and other Texas offices. Applicants must be US citizens or nationals, residents of the delivery area for at least one year, in good health, and meet age requirements. The process includes written tests and evaluations of education and experience with three top eligibles sent to the Postmaster General for nomination.
Miss Marjorie Brod, SHS senior, won the John W Carpenter Essay Contest with Why I Like To Live On The Farm. She receives a $100 award presented by John W Carpenter at the Honor Award Banquet. Her family and Homemaking teacher are invited to the State Fair of Texas event October 3 4 at the Adolphus Hotel with expenses paid.
Polio victim Charles Janota, long treated at Bracken Ridge Hospital in Austin since July 11, was transferred Monday to Gonzales Warm Springs Foundation for extensive therapy. Visiting hours at the foundation are 2 to 4 PM Sundays.
Lavaca County Chapter collects 25200 from the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis to fund polio patient care. Judge Paul H. Fertsch notes funds split with headquarters and detail past year appeals and current need as polio cases rise. He urges local organizations to support the January march of dimes drive to sustain care.
Beginning Friday September 26 the Palace Theatre will start nightly shows at 7:30 PM setting the new regular show time for all performances and patrons.
Hallettsville and neighboring towns back a new U S 90 A linkage between Seguin and Eagle Lake to shorten travel times and reduce congestion on current routes. The plan, proposed by the Gonzales Chamber, requires regional cooperation and signage to guide drivers onto the shorter corridor. Road officials note the change will shift traffic from U S 90 and save about 40 minutes between Houston and San Antonio.
