Youth Sunday at United Dr. Martin Luther Church features a film presentation of Youth For The Kingdom. The 75 minute movie offers a timely message on Christian training for the coming generation and invites all to attend.
Staff Sgt. Eddie Smith and Mrs. Smith announce a daughter Mary Ann born Sept 4 at Kelly Field weighing 7 12. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Buster Burkett of San Antonio and Mrs. Louise Burkett of Shiner. Frank Lehnert Jr and wife Evelyn Koch welcome twins Charlene and Marlene born Aug 29 at Hugo Strieder Hospital in Moulton weighing 4 3 and 3 10. The Lehnerts become grandparents. Henry Condel and wife Miss Josephine Schlein schok have a baby girl born Sept 12 weighing 7 12. Grandparents are Mr. and Mrs. Joe Schrein schok. Fred Koenig reports a son born Sept 14 weighing 8 11. Willard Hagendorf and wife Miss Irene Ullmann welcomed a son Sept 14 weighing 7 5, making Hagendorf and Ullmann grandparents.
Margaret Mann studied under local instructors for nine years and spent a semester at the University of Texas. She now runs a Yoakum music studio with Dr. Gregory Kazdan, a concert pianist from the Busick School of Music in Houston. Contact 272R in Yoakum to enroll.
Edwin D. Holchak Jr of Kenedy has left for New York City to attend Columbia University for a masters in music education. He earned a Bachelor of Music from the University of Texas in June and belongs to two honorary music fraternities. Friends here will follow his career with affection.
The Rev J J Hanacek reports the Catholic Parish picnic on Sunday September 6 drew record attendance and gross receipts of 10000 with net receipts of 7250.
The P T A executive officers at the high school named room mothers for the 1948 49 term. Appointment lists cover First through Twelfth grades with chairmen and multiple assistants named for each grade.
Local Lavaca County natives Mat Bozka and Warren Lee Menking are featured riders at the Hallettsville Fiesta rodeo Friday and Saturday September 17 and 18. Bozka, a 225 pound bulldogger, shows world championship potential with more practice. Menking is a top roper and bulldogger. both hail from Lavaca County and were born near Shiner and Hallettsville respectively.
Frederick Avery, Naval Academy Museum model shipmaker, plans a secretive Ararat expedition to verify Noah's Ark remains. He will compare any finds against Genesis dimensions, using gopher wood and pitch as described, while Ben F. Allen reports for Deluge Geography.
Humble Oil and Refining Co opens the fourteenth season of Southwest Conference football broadcasts with three inter sectional games. At 12 50 p m the Texas Aggies meet Villanova from Franklin Field Philadelphia. At 1 50 p m the Texas University LSU game from Memorial Stadium Austin airs along with the TCU Kansas clash from Lawrence.
Due to rain the Moulton softball tournament was postponed for one week and will start tonight September 16. The Shiner All Stars will face the Moulton VFW at 9:15 p.m. Come out and root for your home team.
County home demonstration agent recommends three steps to prolong bloom: cut faded blossoms, keep soil moist with fertile ground, and provide sun. Fertilize sparingly, water weekly, and mulch to retain moisture. Dust leaves for mildew and prune before seed formation to extend flowering.
At the last Legion meeting it was decided to hold the annual Armistice Day dance on November 11 with other entertainments planned. Further details will be announced later.
Two Gonzales company recruiters visit Shiner on Saturday September 18 to discuss enlistments in the 36th Infantry Division. They answer questions on pay enlistment status and training bills as units drill weekly and offer pathways to commissions or specialized Army schools with full pay.
Naval recruiters Doyle Clardy and Roman Hanak present four reels of war films at the City Auditorium tonight at 8 15 p m. The event is sponsored by V F W Post 6209 and free to the public. Navy veterans who have not yet received listed medals may obtain them this evening. The films have drawn large crowds in neighboring towns. Post 6209 and the Auxiliary meeting is postponed to September 23.
Patek's Orchestra is heard Sundays from 4 to 5 p.m. on KCTI Gonzales in a Spoetzl Brewery sponsored program. Polka numbers feature in the broadcast originating at Blucher Park in Shiner with courtesy from Joe Patek, Joe Muras and Doc.

The Texas secretary of state drew the eight proposed constitutional amendments to appear on the November ballot. The list includes proposals on county workers compensation, redistricting after each census, community property division to avoid inheritance taxes, gubernatorial succession, preserving homestead exemptions, shifting county official pay to salaries, abolishing general ad valorem taxes for state purposes, and establishing a judicial retirement system.

Joseph Muras official agent of Pan-American Life Insurance Co and Mrs Muras travel with Dorothy Anna Marie and Rosalie to Havana Cuba to attend the Pan-American Life Insurance Co convention on Sept 21 22 and 23 Delegates from 22 states and 13 Latin American countries will gather. They travel by car to Miami then board the U S Florida to Cuba assisted by L F Mikulenka Mrs Mikulenka Marion Vacek and Rowena Johnson.
